Hi my dad has been diagnosed with liver cancer but hasn’t spread they are wanting to do a liver biopsy and angiogram before offering SIRT where they direct radioactive beads directly at the large tumour has anybody gone through anything like this. I’m struggling emotionally as a daughter as mum has also been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer of the lungs. So dealing with 2 parents at the same time.
Hi
I'm so sorry to hear about your mum and dad and I hope I can help you by sharing my experiences. SIRT is a relatively new and very expensive treatment and its very positive that they think your dad will benefit.
I was diagnosed with liver cancer 12 months ago from a scan. I had a biopsy to determine whether it was a liver related tumour or secondary from elsewhere and whether SIRT was a suitable treatment. It is a primary cancer and SIRT was suitable for me, so I had treatment in September. Do not be worried about the treatment, it seems a little scary but it's painless and the recovery is painless, but you could be very tired for few months. The only pain that may occur is in the top right shoulder , which can occur after the biopsy and the SIRT treatment and will go very quickly with pain killers. I had some pain but it doesn't affect everyone. Apparently the nerves around the abdomen are linked to the shoulder ! - who knew !
At my Febuary scan, the tumour has shrunk and they believe what remains (6cm) is damage from the radiation. At my May scan its the same and my consultant is encouraged. I have had MRI scans to check other parts of the body which have been clear. So, it's just see how things go, I feel well and my liver function is good. Because the treatment is new, I think the scans are difficult to interpret sometimes, luckily I'm being treated at Newcastle which is a centre for excellence.
To be honest, I was really down at my diagnosis, but SIRT is one of the best treatment they have. I have 2 children and I know they were so upset, but they have been so positive for me and have lifted my spirits and I know that has been hard from them . This is so hard for you but hope you can stay positive for your dad and find some TLC for yourself.
