My Dad (70yrs) has been diagnosed with liver cancer in the last few days. I’ve been told today that his file has now been reviewed fully and no treatment options are possible. They’ve said it’s too big for surgery and that because he has jaundice he isn’t eligible for chemo. Reading some of the other stories on this page I guess I’m looking for some hope, and whether people have been able to reverse a ‘no surgery’ decision, or whether jaundice has stopped people from being able to take some of the drugs that are mentioned quite frequently such as Sorafenib. So far my dad has been told almost nothing, I currently know more than he does, so I want to go to the next appointment ready to ask questions about any and all options that we should consider even if the chances are low. Please spam me with as many treatment options as you can think of, I’m new to this situation, this vocabulary and the fear of the unknown is quite overwhelming. Thank you x
Hi and welcome to the online community although I'm sorry you've had to find us.
I'm not a member of this group, as I had a different type of cancer, but I noticed that your post had gone unanswered. By replying to you it will bump it back to the top of the page where it'll hopefully be seen by people who can tell you about their treatment.
You might find this page about treating liver cancer useful in looking at alternatives for your dad. Just click on any of the sub-headings to read more about who the treatment is suitable for. You could also print out this list of questions to take with you when you next see your dad's consultant. Not all of these will be relevant but it gives you a good starting point.
I noticed that you said that you currently know more than your dad about his condition. I'm not sure if this is because you've looked into his condition more or because he doesn't want to know. If it's the latter then be mindful of this when asking questions of his consultant in front of him.
When you have a minute it would be really useful if could pop something about your dad's journey so far into your profile as it helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
Wishing you and your dad all the best
x
Thanks for your response. We have an appointment tomorrow and hopefully gain some clarity. I’ll look at setting up my profile fully when I get a chance. Thanks!
