Ive joined this group because of my husband...im actually recently finished treatment for anal cancer and found my support group so helpful that I am reaching out for some help/advise for him.

He had his kidney removed in may, some cancerous cells had got into the fatty tissue around it so he has been put on immunotherapy for one year...he had first session 4 wks ago. He is having a really bad time with the reaction to his skin...like a rash  incredibly itchy and skin actually breaking in some areas. He haz done everything advised, antihistamines..E45, eurax cream, baths in avenue or bicarb if soda...nothing is really helping. It's affecting his everyday life and his sleep which obviously has ongoing effects.

Just wondered if anyone could share anything they found really helped...just worried he may decide to stop treatment as he has already said he can't cope with a year of this

Thankyou for taking the time to read this

Trace on behalf of ady

  • Hi I have stage four kidney cancer and I am on targeted therpy drup carbozantinib. My main side effects are hand foot syndrome which affects my feet . I treat them with flexitol 25 o/o Urea heel balm . I also use it on the topof my head , it’s the only thing I have found that works. I also use Clotrimazole on sores in my groin area. The Carbozantinib works as my lung tumors are 5mm or less

  • Trace honestly I don’t know if it’s going to help but I was having that itchy skin droveme potty ended up sometimes inflicting deep scratches to myself then I used a cream with Aloe Vera in it, it’s a green coloured bottle available in most supermarkets but unfortunately I can’t remember the name (must be age thing), see if that works for Ady, hope it doesSmiley

  • Thankyou for your reply.....his is all over his body but I will tell him about the cream for groin that you mentioned as I know that's a particularly concerning area for him.

I really hope the rest of your treatment goes well for you..sending positive thoughts

  • Thankyou for taking the time to reply...i will have a look for it when I go shopping tomorrow...i really feel for him as it just seems to be constant..do you mind me asking did your itching last all through treatment?

  • You can get all of the cream in Scotland on prescription and I presume that would be the same in the rest of the UK at the pharmacy

  • Hi - itchy skin is one of the most expected side effects of immunotherapy.

You didn't say what drug it is - pembro?

I wonder whether decreasing the dose would help - something to discuss with the onco.  You still get the benefit of the treatment.   It is a known thing that the dosage is a bit of a guesstimate and they know the dosages are on the high side.  There haven't been many studies or analysis on the optimal dose or length of treatment.  My onco is involved in some research on it.

  • Hi...yes it is pembro...he has a consultation next week so will ask about the dosage then...thankyou
