Kidney cancer diagnosis. Waiting on treatment

Hi everyone, I've recently been diagnosed with kidney cancer. And unfortunately I'm unable to have surgery because of other health conditions. I'm currently waiting on an appointment with the renal team to discuss alternative treatments. 2 weeks following the latest MRI Scans.

I'm still waiting and feeling a bit lost to be honest.

  • Hiya Bazbond....the waiting is the worst. However, you could always phone your renal team. Did they give u any idea how long your mri results would be? Did they suggest treatments to u at ur last visit? If they did then do some research (only British sites ie cancer uk , macmillan etc) ...makes notes so u can ask questions when u see ur renal team. I am sorry I can't say much more at the moment...but make that phone call...here if u need to talk more..hugs..

  • Hi Fleabane, thank you for your response. I have telephoned the department and have spoken to the nurse and they've reviewed my latest scans and will be discussing my case and treatment and should be contacting me shortly. But apparently the renal cancer team only meet one day a week. I will continue to chase them up. In the meantime I have been reading up on the alternative treatments on this website.

  • Now u have had contact with ur team it won't be long before u know what is going on. It is better communicating, you're doing the right thing by phoning.

The information on here is good. You can always ring macmillan too. They are brilliant. Also on this forum we are all at different stages and many are on on treatments so u can always ask how others are coping..

    Never feel alone...

    Hugs

  • Hi Fleabane, thank you so much for your kind words. Everything started quickly at first after original diagnosis, even our GP telephoned us offering their sympathies and help. It's the waiting that's killing, after being told we'd hear from the team within 2 weeks to discuss treatments, it's now 3 weeks and still waiting. I know that probably sounds as moaning, but now life's on hold waiting.  We've put our house sale on hold, we were going to move back down to England from Scotland,  There's no doubt that others are in a worse position than me and I feel a bit selfish in moaning about the waiting time. I wish you well in your own cancer journey, and you have a successful outcome.

    Lots of hugs

  • It happens to us all..the waiting game....life put on hold...and not just ours but our families....my hubby has lost money on trips that had to be cancelled....my last referral papers weren't sent, luckily I rang and that got things moving again...the doctors and nurses are amazing but admin in the NHS lets everyone down. The waiting is definitely the worst. So you are not moaning, you are being honest. It is very hard. I have my appointments and more tests starting in a couple of weeks and I don't have much energy but I try and do housey stuff just to get through the days...so hang on in there,  things will get moving again for u very soon...and if u  wanna moan...go for it...

  • Hi Fleabane, persistence has finally worked. We phoned the renal team secretary last week and was informed by a rather rude and curt lady that they were behind in their work load and we should hear from them in three to four weeks. We informed her that we have already been waiting three weeks, her reply was that the waiting time will be four or more weeks then. However, we phoned again yesterday and spoke to a different secretary who was so helpful in contrast to the other secretary. She brought up our notes and said she will speak to the consultant and phone us back within the hour to update us. She did so 30 minutes later with the news that the team of consultants will be reviewing my scan results on Tuesday next week. The secretary will then be writing to us with the results of that meeting with date of next appointment, and that she will phone us again on the Friday to make sure we have received the letter, and if we haven't by then she will read out the letter to us over the phone. What a lady, unlike the previous unhelpful and uncaring other one.

  • Well done....you just have to be tenacious,  like u said in a polite way. There is always one that is grumpy, they have such a hard job. Still no reason to be mean though, but at least u got a nicer person second time. I know it still doesn't feel quick enough, but hopefully u have read some of the other uplifting  forum stories. Kidney cancer is slow growing, so I am told..so we all have a bit of wriggle room. Here if u need anything. Ty so much for letting me know. Hugest hugs...

  • Hi Fleabane, I will definitely keep you updated as my journey continues. Hopefully I find out more information by Friday. Do take care yourself.

  • Good luck Friday...Smiley
