Hi all, I've had a whirlwind few weeks. I had a routine ultrasound on 9/10 as I have diabetes and the doctor was concerned about liver disease, so I was sent for that. On 15/10 I had a call from hospital asking me to go for a CT scan that very day. So went to that, saw the consultant the following day and he confirmed I had a tumour on my kidney, couldn't say if it was cancerous or benign and I was sent home... stressed out for a couple of days and then had to go back for a 2nd CT scan on the Friday. Then on 30/10 saw the consultant who confirmed I did have cancer. I've had no symptoms at all. It was just an ultrasound looking at something else that led to this. I'm still in shock. My head feels like it's in a constant fuzz, I had almost 2 weeks of not knowing and then had the news. I'm booked in for keyhole surgery on 15/11 and I'm so terrified, I'm 50 and have never had surgery before. So again y head is all over the place. I've got a 12 week sicknote from my gp so don't have to worry about work or anything but I'm someone who is always doing something so is going to be very hard to just sit and relax and get well again. I'm a single mum, my kids are 16 & 2 so will have my mum and sister coming to help out with the kids.
I think once I get there next week, I will finally realise what's going on as it's definitely not sunk in yet. I think I'm just on auto pilot at the min. I hoping my recovery time will be okay. I've been advised I'll have a check up on 6 weeks and I'll have to inject myself for 28 days after.
Thanks for allowing me to join this group chat.
Hi, it seems to be happening very fast for you, i had a scan on 15/10 waited a week for a ct scan, they said its probably cancer 6.7x6x6cm lump, have to wait till 19/11 to see a consultant to talk about surgery so no idea when it will hapoen or what surgery i will have, waiting around with no information is the worst part, but at least they are sorting you out quickly, hope it all goes well for you.
Sorry you are also going through this. I had almost 2 weeks if not knowing and I think that has messed with my mental health more than everything else that's going on. They said it was around 4.3cm when they did the 2nd ct scan. I'm worried about the surgery as I've never had an operation before. But I've been reassured that I will be okay. Hope everything goes well for you too. I'll be thinking of you x
I’m glad you have someone to help after the op. It is natural to worry and I reckon that everyone who ever had a diagnosis of cancer goes into a spin of anxiety. The good news is that they have processed you quickly.
My own experience of the actual op was that it was not as bad as I expected. With a Laparoscopic Nephrectomy I had multiple small scars but they healed well and I was lucky because they weren’t as painful as I expected. I am the kind of person who researches beforehand so I knew what to expect and prepared everything as much as I could before I went into hospital, to make my life easier while incapacitated.
Best wishes and I hope all goes well for you.
Im in the same boat as you, not had an op before, thats more worrying for me than the cancer, ive been knocked out to have a camera inside me and that was bad enough. If im in for a few days ill be on my own as the hospital is 60 miles from home and my partner is disabled so cant have her visiting everyday. Really hate the waiting lol
So sorry you’re going through this but at least the cancer has been found and they’ve acted so quickly.
I was exactly the same as you, went for an ultrasound for something else and found a 5cm mass on my right kidney. I too didn’t have any symptoms. I had my whole kidney removed in Sept by keyhole and has been very successful. I’m 52 and went into the op fit as I workout for a living and after 8 weeks I was back at the gym and teaching again.
Thats fantastic you have your Mum and sister to help you when you’re recovering and make sure you try to fully relax in order to heal. I watched loads of tv, tried a sewing project and walked little distances everyday.
Take all the help you can and try and see it as a positive as the cancer was found and you are going to recover from this.
I hope that helps xxx
In general most people seem to say the surgery is not as bad as they feared. Normally they are home again in a couple of days. I was. The vast majority of cancer patients at least in this forum seem to be having very positive outcomes. Touch wood. So yes. It is a traumatic time but things do improve as you come to terms with it. Best wishes.
