Supporting my husband

Hi Everyone,

My husband is just starting on his journey with Kidney cancer and I'm trying to understand not only his diagnosis and treatment but how I can help him. He is 63 and has always been relatively fit and healthy just suffering with High Blood pressure which has been controlled by medication. He was diagnosed in late May and has had scans, tests etc which have revealed the Kidney cancer has spread into his spine and he also has a cancer in his lung which is not related. The lung cancer was a huge shock, not that the kidney cancer wasn't, but he has never smoked and has always been very fit. He had a kidney biopsy earlier this week and next Friday we have a meeting during which we hope to get a treatment plan. They are currently talking about immunotherapy and possible radiotherapy on his spine, the only area that seems to be causing pain. It just seems this has completely turned life on it's head, I feel responsible for ensuring he's ok, and he's being amazing to be fair but I just hope he knows he can tell me what he wants as he does often keep things in. Any advise, or previous experiences from anybody who has been through similar would be a great help.

Thank you

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read that your husband has recently been diagnosed with kidney cancer and it's natural to want to know what to expect.

I haven't had this type of cancer but noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list where it'll be easier for the other members of the group to see.

While you're waiting for replies, it would be great if you could pop something about your husband's diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
