Hi,
I've recently been told I have a 3.4cm soft tissue mass/tumour on my right kidney. I've been told not to worry and, since it was discovered incidentally, they will scan it in a couple of months and monitor it. It's impossible not to worry, especially as it's also impossible not to Google symptoms/prognosis etc. I have also been told that there is no blood supply.....could this mean it's benign? I guess I want some reassurance. I hope I have come to the right place.
Thanks
Hi
i‘m not sure about the lack of blood supply, the kidneys filter all your blood, so must be fed by blood. The fact it’s 35mm in size, is below the operable guidance of +40mm, so I guess that’s why they’re waiting. No consolation for you, but they took 40% of my right kidney away 10/12 years ago - and it’s now returned. Currently 65mm, yet up to now they’re doing nothing. I too am struggling with the service we get from the NHS.
No blood supply is a good sign, as it restricts the growth of the tumor. As I understand it, Kidney tumors are very slow growing. Hopefully this will help a little to ease your concern. Everyone heads to google, I did too.
It will also help to write down a list of your concerns, you will have been given contact numbers for your specialist nurse. Instead of waiting for your next consultation, give your nurse a ring and ask your questions, to ease your mind. They will be happy to help.
You could also go to the Ask an Expert page here, to ask the same questions. Although the nurses there, would not have access to your records, but would probably be able to help with most of your concerns. Stay strong friend, you've definitely come to the right place for support.
"Not to worry". Yeah, easier said than done, definitely. We have all struggled with this at some point and it's most difficult at the start.
Kidney cancer is sometimes known as "the silent one" because many people get no symptoms and it's frequently discovered as an incidental finding as part of an investigation into something else. This is what happened to me.
The positives are that it's being watched and monitored, but of course, as you've articulated, that allows it to play on your mind. Who wouldn't be thinking about it all the time.
Blood supply - even before reading the response from the others my immediate thought was "this is good". Because one of the drug treatments is to cut off the blood supply to the tumour.
You can phone up Macmillan and they may be able to help with the medical approach, and how to deal with the waiting. Whenever I've had this "constantly on my mind" problem it's been solved by starting treatment, or resolving the medical glitch, so not much help there. 3.4cm isn't very big.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
