Hi.
I've just been diagnosed with Kidney Cancer from an Ultrasound scan. My mind is running riot and I'm not sleeping. I have a CT scan booked for Tues 29th to find the extent of the disease. I have a 4cm cyst on the lower lobe whic is discribed a suspicious as it has a single septation and possible calcification.
Does anyone have any tips on how to keep anxiety levels under control ? I keep telling myself that worrying is not going to help, but my sleeping is completely disrupted by anxiety. I panic that it may not be confined to my kidney as my mother died of pancreatic cancer at the age I am now ( 61 ).
Any help / encouragement would much appreciated.
Hi, I’m sorry to hear of your recent diagnosis and your anxiety is completely understandable. I was diagnosed 8 weeks ago and had a radical nephrectomy on Tuesday last. What I realised early on was that my initial fear and anxiety were worse than my actual diagnosis. I started meditating and doing mindfulness exercises to change the narrative in my head. This really worked for me. The thought of living in fear day to day is much worse than any disease. Try spoiling yourself, do things that bring you joy and you’ll soon rise above the fear and anxiety. Good luck on your journey (you are not alone). Xx
Thank you for your quick response. Thanks for reminding me about Meditation and Mindfullness. I have used those techniquies in the distant past. I guess my anxiety comes from the unknown .. i.e. I have a first diagnosis but don't know the extent of the issue. From your experince it sounds like kidney cancer is treatable and even cureable if the circumstances are right. I just need to understand if those circumstances apply to me. Thanks again for taking the time to respond. Much appreciated.
The ‘not knowing’ is the one thing to conquer first. The wheels turn slowly in this regard. I had an 8cm tumour on my left kidney plus a cystic mass heading toward my spleen. I have no idea whether e surgery was a cure, apparently, the kidney will be sent off for histology after which I will be called back in for the results (this could be 6-8 weeks). In the meantime, the sun is shining today,’m home and making the most of every second. ️
