Hi my husband has had his first treatment of ipi/niv for secondary kidney cancer. After initially feeling ok the side effects have hit him like a ton of bricks. It's effecting his bowels causing pain and diarrhoea and due to this he's not managing to eat much. He's lost 5kg in a few days. It's quite scary as he's only 45 and previous to all this has been fit and healthy. I'm just worried he's only got a week until his next treatment and he won't have recovered from his first. Has anyone had similar side effects and been able to continue on treatment? Thank you

  • Hi had same problem.lodt 6lb they stopped my treatment for a week.immuatherepy and anixitab tablets continued treatment week.later and developed a severe chest infection really scared me antibiotics for 2 weeks so stopped treatment again starting it again this Thursday dreading it already x

Sorry to hear this. He's a bit better now but developed a tooth abscess. He's still quite wiped out and his next treatment is this Tuesday. He had an oncology phone appointment and the consultant seemed to think it was too early for it to be toxicity and kept asking if it was a bug (because we have four children). It definitely wasn't a bug no one else had any symptoms.

I'll just have to phone in as soon as he gets any side effects this time so that they can counteract them. I couldn't last weekend as we were away in a hotel where he spent most of the weekend in bed or in the bath and was just trying to muddle through.

  • Sometimes they just delay the next treatment by a week or so.  Also, there has been a trial that demonstrates schedule delays or a longer timeframe between treatments doesn't have a negative effect.  Ping me if you want the link for the trial results.  It was on the Leeds Uni website title "Spacing out treatment for kidney cancer over a longer period produces fewer side effects without diminishing results.".

  • Hi all after horrible chest infection lasting two weeks and 2 lots of antibiotics  restarted treatment Thursday like I said I was dreading it but up to now seem OK just bit itchy so fingers crossed I'm gonna be ok plus appetite really good after loosing weight x

Thank you. I'd really like the link to that research. He's having to have a gap due to us going away on holiday.

Glad you've been OK following treatment. It's reassuring to read others experiences the good and the bad. Hope you don't loose any weight this round x
