Hello, all,

as a former Community Champion but with experience in lymphoma firstly (then breast cancer for myself) I wonder if there are any CC’s with kidney cancer experience here?

It seems husband has inoperable kidney cancer with mets but we as yet still haven’t got a diagnosis (third attempt at a biopsy 2 days ago) and the renal unit in our local hospital are overworked and significantly understaffed. Any possible cancer treatment will be dealt with at an Oxford hospital 40 miles away. Hubs has spinal stenosis too so his mobility isn’t great. I’m tempted to ask for transport as he hates me driving him, and I’m not confident at long distances.

Hubs has now got meds to reduce potassium (it has been high, leading to hospital admissions twice) but nobody has told me whether he needs to follow a low K diet strictly or not!

help? Any advice?

  • Hii  I'm the current CC for the kidney cancer group. I'm sorry to hear about your husband's inoperable kidney cancer. As you'll probably know, kidney cancer is a slow grower compared to other cancers  n there are many meds he can now take, with more being developed all the time, incl immunotheraphy. These meds will help with the mets as well, eg I've had mine for years n take Pazopanib, with regular monitoring scans to make sure all's stable.

I would guess s low K diet would b useful but you may find it better to "ask an expert", allowing a couple of days for them to reply.

Once he has a diagnosis and treatment ,plan you'll both feel a lot more settled.

Re transport, transport may seem like the better option but bear in mind he could b in the ambulance vor most of the day,tho at least he could lie down.

    Hope that's helpful,

    Sue

  • Thanks for your helpful reply, it offers hope too.
I think maybe transport for the first time may help as at least then he will be able to take note of where to go and how we might be able to park, bearing in mind he has a blue badge anyway, (has done for years because of spinal stenosis)
