So 8 hours ago I was told by my GP that a CT scan showed my left kidney had swollen and there’s a very real chance it’s cancer. 4 months ago I was woke in the night with flank pain. It was put down to kidney stones. All bloods perfect, no blood in urine etc. Then had an ultrasound in July which confirmed 2 small stones. I was asked if I want to let them pass or go to a urologist. I chose the urologist which meant a CT scan. This came back yesterday with the GP telling me that it picked up an enlarged kidney which the ultrasound did not pick up 8 weeks ago.
need more scans this next 2 weeks to verify what is suspected.
so I start the journey that at 51 , when I feel 40 and joint thousands of others.
Im awake all night worrying, waiting for the morning to arrive.
Hello argill
It is horrid waiting because one is bound to be anxious. You clearly made the right choice in going to a urologist and it is good that you have CT scans scheduled. I had a radical nephrectomy mid July so I am just a little further on in my journey.
Thankyou for the reply. How is your surgery and recovery, if you don’t mind me asking?
I was only in hospital two days. The surgery went well and the nurses and physios were brilliant at helping me to get up and moving about. Because it was laparoscopic I have three small incisions and one larger horizontal one. They have healed really well and the whole process was much less painful than I feared. If I was making a list with most painful first it would go: broken arm, hysterectomy, kidney removal! I feel almost back to normal now, just a little sensitivity in one of the smaller scars. Feel free to ask any questions!
Hi Argill,
Back in April also at the age of 51 I was diagnosed with Kidney cancer, having discovered a 10cm tumor my left kidney was removed.
The hospital staff were fantastic and the operation went very well, I went into hospital on Wednesday morning had the operation at 3 in the afternoon and went home the very next day. I was able to get up and walk the morning after the operation which helped me feel better, I was later released with a box of paracetamol and 28 blood thinning injections.
I have been back at work for just over two months now, as a keen cyclist i have also completed a 50 mile ride so my recovery is going well.
At your age you'll be great.
Graham.
