Interview...do I tell them?

I have a job interview tomorrow. It is due to start immediately,  however I haven't had a date for my kidney cancer surgery , I don't know whether I should mention it or wait to see if I am offered the post? I welcome any advice.

  • Definitely don't tell them, voluntarily.  But never lie.   You would only consider sharing if they asked whether you had any operations scheduled.   But that is one of the black listed questions, like asking a young lady if she planned to have children.  

    I wouldn't even mention it after you are offerred the post.  Health is a standard contract between an employee and an employer and you have protected status because you have cancer.   

    There's many people on here who wait a few weeks for their surgery.  But there's also many who wait 9+ months as well.  It's not necessarily just around the corner, or even guaranteed.  

    You wouldn't ask the interview panel, who I assume will include your new line manager, whether they had plans to be out-the-office after you started, would you?

    I haven't had a chance to.look around the school yet and so i don't know if its right for me. There is a slightly more attractive post coming up after Christmas for a year contract that I think I would really like...however, I no interview date for that yet....so it's a wait and see......

  • I second what Mmum says. Go for the job you want. Take the interviews. Put to the back of your mind your surgery issue, as indeed it may not happen imminently. Get one foot in the door of whichever job you opt for, and deal with the surgery as and when it becomes a reality. I have never ever come across an interviewer who asked about my health or whether I had any operations scheduled!! If you have been healthy for many years and not had much time off work ever, this will be apparent on your CV or your references so it's unlikely they will even think of asking about your future health!!

  • I have a different view. I would be honest and tell your prospective employer. They can then support you and its also a good test of their intgerity. 

    Thetes no nasty surprused for either party and youbmsy have to completeva medical disclosure where you would have to state this. Withholding this information isnt great as you both have a duty of care legally to ensure you are safe and fit to do the job and other workers are safe too.

    Employers are niw realusung that people do get cancer...1 in 2 now and are gettung far more savvy supporting those who have or had cancer in the workplace.

    If you are the best candidate for the role you will get the job. If you think you dud not get the role because of cancer then you can pop in a data acces request and put in a claim to ACAS. You are automatically covered by the Equality Act 2010.

    I was diagnosed in 2017, stage 4 in 2022 and I have always been honest and its not stopped me from securing senior roles within rail, construction, prisoner transportation and logistics.
