Operation day tomorrow! Feeling very anxious about the anaesthetic Weary Can I get your positive recovery stories please?

  • Thankyou for your reply. That’s good to hear. Hopefully it goes smoothly for me x

  • I felt the same as you, I’d rather be awake have local anesthetic and watch it happen. That wasn’t going to happen! This was my 4th general and was the calmest I’d ever been. Anesthetist was lovely, explained all, chat with surgeons and then walked to the theatre, got in there, some calming chat as they did their thing. Said hi to the robot too. Told me to think of somewhere nice where I want to be whilst having a nap, so off I went to the race track. Woke up after a bit for a sandwich and cuppa.

Word of advice don’t text back too many people when full of meds, I read back some of my messages. Shall we say there were a few very amusing things sent which clearly showed I was a bit out of it.

Good luck, thinking of you and let us all know how you get on x

  • I was really worried about the anesthetic too so I think it's totally normal. But the doctors know what they are doing and no doubt you'll be in excellent hands. And it really does feel like no time has passed at all. One minute the anesthetist was telling me that I would soon start to feel relaxed, the next minute I was waking up in the recovery room. It felt like the blink of an eye :)

  • Hi Disney1234,

I know it is easy for me to say don’t worry they will be really good with you and put you at your ease, when you wake up you will probably be in ICU and you will have a nurse assigned to you, you will think how silly it was for you being worried than in no time at all you will be coming home sending hugs and best wishes to you Sandy

  • Hi Disney1234

I couldn't wait to get in the theatre, it was a case of if I didn't get this thing out it was game over, as my specialist put it. My anesthetist remarked my BP and heart rate was normal, which is unusual. Its the best sleep I'd had for a long time. Your probably recovering now , all the best for the future

How are things going one week after your op Disney1234?

  • Not too bad Thankyou. It was more painful for the first few days after than I thought it was going to be tbh but it’s easing each day. How did your op go and how are you feeling?

So glad to hear your recovery is going well - it is a major thing to have to deal with. First 3 days for me were not too bad at all thanks to the fentanyl via epidural, and very sore indeed after that ended and they tried me on codeine which gave me a bad hot flush reaction so had oral morphine instead which was good at numbing the pain.
Op took over 4 hours as extra had to be done for me including hernia repair. They confirmed all the tumour was removed so waiting for histology results now on grade and prognosis.
I had 5 nights in hospital and was back home yesterday. Really nice to be back in my own bed but still trying to find the best sleeping position at the moment. Digestive system still trying to sort itself out.
Ticking off the days as they pass. Staples will be coming out on Monday at my local GP surgery.

All the best to you and everyone else who are dealing with cancer.

  • Well done , rest up

  • That’s great to hear. I was in hospital for 3 days, I had codeine oral morphine and paracetamol but the codeine gave me weird dreams so stopped having that after 2 days. My op was 6 hours in the end, tumour was 10 & 1/2 cm and also all removed successfully. I’ve got my appointment on 15th April for follow up to see the grading etc also. Mine are dissolvable stitches so luckily don’t have to go and have them taken out. Good luck with your recovery Heart️‍
