Where can I buy the correct nephrostomy night bags

Hi there  My husband has been diagnosed with bladder cancer for about 10 months now.  He's had radiotherapy which was unsuccessful.  He is 81 and his cancer has spread so he is not a candidate for chemoor Immuno Therapy.  He has just come out of hospital after having a kidney infection which resulted in him having a second nephromostomy bag.  We are currently getting up twice in the night to empty the bags, particularly the right bag.  I have been on Amazon and other sites looking to buy night bags which we can connect to the day bag so that it will drain into the larger (I believe 2L) and he can get some much needed undisturbed sleep.  The problem I have is I don't know what bags I should be ordering.  For example I saw UGO drainage bags but they talk about ordering the one with the correct connection.  I don't know what connection we need.  The District Nurses change his leg bags once a week and the bags used are MERIT DRAINAGE DEPOT which have a screw tap.  Is there anyone that would be able to tell me which bags are the ones to buy.  I feel stumped when they all refer to catheter bags and I'm not sure whether these are interchangeable.  Many thanks.

  • Surely your team/nurse specialist /consultant should be able to advise?  Or try phoning the Helpline at Macmillan they may be able to provide a steer?  Pardon my ignorance but I would have thought the NHS would provide them?

  • Hello PennyB

I am sorry to read about your husband's diagnosis with bladder cancer.

You say he has his leg bags changed by the district nurses once a week- I wonder if they would be the best people to ask as they would know what he is currently using and what the correct connection would be needed? Maybe also it is something that they should provide for him on the NHS? If you want to do it earlier your GP surgery should be able to give a phone number for the District Nurses.

It sounds really sensible to consider the night bags as it must be tiring to have to get up in the night to empty the existing ones.

Can I suggest that you think about giving the Support Line a call and ask to speak to one of the nurses on there. They would be able to advise you on this and if they are not available on the NHS where you could get them from. The number is below and there will be someone on there from 8am tomorrow.

    I hope this helps

    Jane

  • Bullen Healthcare - excellent service

  • Thank you for your reply. I have already spoken to our district nurse who comes every week to change the leg bags. She has looked into my request and she has come back to say they don’t supply night bags and could only suggest I make sure I get the right connectors when looking on line.  So no help there. The nurse on the ward said they don’t supply them as they empty the bags as and when required when patients are admitted   So no help there. There is no one else I can ask. I feel as if I am having to sort things that I don’t know how to sort. My husband is too ill to help. I have just seen a post from Jane2511 also saying the same thing. I will ring the support line tomorrow as she suggests.

  • Bullen Healthcare provided night bags for my wife’s nephrostomies. They were very helpful in identifying the one she needed and their delivery service is excellent.

  • Thank you for your response. I will get on the case tomorrow. Thank you so much.
