Hey everyone, just a quick question. Where any of you given advice on what to avoid when eating after loosing a kidney? I'm trying to lose weight but finding it really hard as I'm getting older and menopausal. Was just reading an article on macros and it stated that someone with 1 kidney needs to watch their protein intake and to avoid tinned food because of the salt content....that has completely threw me off now, I'm lost. Can anyone offer some advice please? Love to you all. xx
Oh! That's a weird one. My understanding is that it's perfectly possible for the body to function with one kidney only and no dietary adjustment is necessary. I would do some verification on the source of that advice and whether it was from a reputable origin.
Others who have had nephrectomies will perhaps be able to add what they were advised later. I still have 2 kidneys.
Hi Meloria, I hope you are well. I had my left kidney and quite a lot of the plumbing removed about 16 months ago due that being the primary site of my cancer. I was very concerned at the time about what effect losing a kidney would have on my general wellbeing but I need not have worried because I have been fine. As for eating and drinking I haven't changed my diet much at all, with the exception of cutting out salt and reducing my intake of alchohol in line with normal guidance. I've not reduced my protein intake, in fact it has probably increased slightly as I try to retain muscle mass for work. I believe if you eat sensibly, avoid salty food and drink sensibly, including lots of water, you should be fine. I hope this helps.
All the best,
Mike
I had my left kidney removed 11 years ago and I am having immunotherapy treatment at present and was told both at the beginning and prior to starting immunotherapy by my consultant that there was no need to change my diet which I would say is a pretty average diet of meat, veg, fruit occasionally a take away etc.
Hi Meloria I totally agree with the others take care of what you are eating a more balanced diet and less alcohol ( I have done both after my nephrectomy) however after I left hospital after surgery the only thing that I craved were ready salted crisps, when I told my nurse she advised too much salt can kill you. Sorry for the light hearted quote but after everything else I think it's a moderation thing as well as lifestyle.
Stay safe and positive

Hi Meloria,
I went on a low salt diet after my left kidney and spleen removal, I also gave up meat and processed foods, the only problem I came across that I ended up with dangerous low sodium and ended up in hospital, I was put on a fluid diet and my oncologist said put lots of salt on my fish and chips, I could not start my new immunotherapy for nearly two months, so I have gone back on to my normal diet, I do believe everyone is different so you will have to see what’s suits you, I only have half a kidney working so I might be different to you.
Sending best wishes to you and hope you get it sorted out
Sandy
