Fatigue

Hi folks not heard from anyone lately, hope you're all hanging in there! I am sure this will not be a new thread but after finishing 8  chemos ( Gem/Cis) in January 2022 and then feeling reasonably OK, I am now experiencing high levels of fatigue  including leg muscle "weakness".

At the risk of repeating, can anyone share any similar trends and how they dealt with it. All answers welcome including ones that are totally irrelevant but will make me laugh. Thanks and regards  Adrian

  • Oh yeah, let's go on this topic!!

My worst fatigue was before diagnosis and then before treatment.  Also after treatment, when immune adverse events kicked in.

It's a weird subject because the cancer can cause low energy levels, and so can the treatment.   I remind myself of this when I think it could be the cancer growing again.

Sometimes I just go to bed early.  Sometimes when I feel tired in the morning, like after getting up, then I force myself to do something and this helps.

I don't think I suffer too badly in the grand schema of things.

  • Thanks Mmum, pathetically l am finding it pretty tough and l a definitely not my chipper old self. Hey ho. Regards to a Adrian

  • Hi Adrian,

Sorry to hear you are feeling fatigue I was not very well back in February when I came off my immunotherapy waiting too start my new treatment, so I’m not sure if when we come off of treatment that’s when it kicks in, will you still be able to go to your caravan for a break are you still not sleeping at night if so it must be a nightmare.

I am busy as usual doing nothing, I see Mmum reply’s is interesting maybe we all suffer at sometime and maybe someone will be able to answer you better, I think I might have trouble walking as I am eating everything in sight at the moment anyone got any ideas to stop me.

How is everyone enjoying our sunshine Sun with face a bit of sun makes us feel so much better, maybe we could all put our heads together and come up with a plan to make Adrian smile Grinning and get his mojo back

    Love Sandy xx

  • Thanks Sandy, just come back from a super week. It's just managing the expectations. When l was in chemo, l felt l was in a bubble of care, medication and similar experiences. But when l came out and as time went on l felt a bit abandonned by oncology and had to struggle to identify a "cancer specialist nurse" who at least could offer some views. My biggest "helper" has been a super locum at my medical centre. Very knowledgable and thorough and covering all bases. So l do march on. Thanks. Adrian

  • Hi Adrian. Sorry you and some of the others are suffering with tirednesses., i am exactly the same. Only out of bed for an hour then feel like I want to just climb back in. I am on so much medication that it takes forever just sorting them out.  We are at our daughters house for  a week and her puppy is keeping us amused. Next Monday we are going to somerset for a week. No food planning or cooking for david which is good. Anyway i feel a nap coming on so all take care love Aileen xx

  • Thanks Gooner, Aileen, l'm not glad you are tired but feel engaged with you guys in what is a difficult effect to conquer. I agree Aileen, animals are the most wonderful tonic; we should have an animal album. Not sure that would be accepted though. It sounds from what folk are saying that my little problem is at the lower end of the scale. Thanks to you all, l have a smile back on my face. Love you all. Adrian

  • It sounds from what folk are saying that my little problem is at the lower end of the scale.

Definitely not.  You are on aggressive treatment (chemo) with impactful side effects, I am on the more easily tolerated modern equivalent, immunotherapy.

  • Hello Adrian in Suffolk. I hope you're having nice weather there. It's nice here in Scunthorpe today, but I'm guessing the scenery is better in Suffolk. I've never been to Suffolk. I worked a summer season when I was 19 in Great Yarmouth, which is near by. I have very happy memories of that summer!

I hope this finds you in good spirits. I see from your posts that you're getting a lot of tiredness. I've been feeling a bit weak and lethargic lately myself and I'm not on any treatment yet. I had my first appointment with an oncologist a couple of days ago and I must say he really perked me up. I.m going on immunotherapy in another few weeks when the paperwork and funding gets sorted out. I'm given to understand that it can buy me lots of time to get my affairs in order. When I was first diagnosed it was surreal. I felt ok then went for a pee and gushed forth a tsunami of blood. Made a right mess of the lavvy pan! I had a second similar episode. I guess the tumour on my kidney had burst.

Since my diagnosis I've had to do battle with the black dog of depression, but the oncologist appointment has helped to lift my spirits. I've given myself a talking to and am now determined to live my life as normally as possible. Going to look at taking the caravan out for some weekends away then my partner has a couple off in September so maybe think about caravanning in Devon. My partner and family have been very supportive and I'm feeling pretty good right now. I hope you're feeling good too Adrian. All the best to you and your's.   Erchie

  • Hi Erchie., it was like I was reading and reliving exactly what happened to me 17 years ago, I was actually out with work for our summer do. I worked in a gp practice, I made excuses and went home early., the following morning i saw my gp and 5 days later was having a left nephrectomy., as I have posted before I have been fine and living life to the full.
unfortunately we had major trauma just over a year ago and the cancer is back with a vengeance. I have had major surgery, 5 rounds of radiotherapy and 2 infusions so far. I am suffering extreme tiredness and a very very sore mouth with difficultly swallowing.

the thing I enjoy most is a lovely evening meal so this part for me is really difficult. Thank goodness I am not alone. It really does help to talk to others in the same boat or even worse bless them, great for you to have a plan for September in the caravan. We are off to somerset on Monday for a week. No cooking at all so gives david my husband a rest. Sounds like you are dealing with it head on. Well done you and take care. Aileen x

  • Thanks Erchie  and thank you for replying. Sorry to hear your condition but glad you are getting appropriate treatment in due course. I am at home at present but hoping to get away soon. Like you l gave myself a talking to and formed a sensible game plan to progress myself forward. Part of the problem was that l was very constipsted from Morphine. In consequence l was taking powerful and prescribed laxitives. I became bloated, especially ankles, vety tired AND fatigued and suffered back and stomuch pains. On reading the laxitive side effects l was getting the self same side effects, which l then reported to DR. Result stop taking laxitive medicine and try more water, veggies, roughage natural remedies. Early dsys but seems to be working.  Moral of the story DO READ THE MEDICINE INSTRUCTIONS  THEY CAN BE USEFUL.

Thanks to all for responses, l will try to remember to update my progress. Love Adrian
