Hi

I had a radical nephrectomy in March and I’m due back to work soon. I’ve had 3 months off but don’t feel ready to be going back yet, I work in a supermarket stacking shelves. For anyone who does this kind of work how long did you take off? I still get aches if I move to fast or push myself too much. I haven’t even been able to go out in the car anywhere myself with my daughter yet as I can’t lift her too much or get her Pram in and out of the car myself. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi  is there a way you can have a phased return to work/ get more time off?

Sounds like your body's telling you it's not ready yet, especially if you can't lift your daughter or her pram into the car.

I was lucky n had a phased return, but the I did work for local govt

It might b worth you talking to HR in advance. Also, ring the helpline on 0808 808 0000 to see what your legal position is.

Thank you for replying , I’m going to see about getting some more time off then I’ve been told a phased return shouldnt be a problem. I feel like I look  a bit of a fraud as on the outside I look fine but people don’t realise what’s all going on the inside , I might look like I’m walking around ok but it’s the tiredness and aches that follow as the day goes on. • Indeed , I remember it only too well! N my son was 10, so past the pram stage. Glad you can have a phased return. They're really useful, especially in a physical job like yours
