Lurking from the bladder cancer forum… advice needed please

Hi,

I posted the following message in the bladder cancer forum and was advised to try on here and see if anyone could help….

My dad was diagnosed with bladder cancer 15 years ago and has always been very secretive about his treatment. He gives us as a family the very bare basics of information and not let anyone come to appointments with him.

He has had many reoccurrences over the years and around 6 years ago had to have one of his kidneys removed due to the cancer spreading. I know that he’s been told that his cancer is no longer curable only treatable.

He’s had his usual follow up appointments recently along with several scans and has today had an appointment with his consultant and told us that they’ve found a shadow on his remaining kidney and he’s got to have a small operation to look at it.

He won’t offer any more information. I’m worried as to what this might mean for him having already had to have one kidney removed.

Can anyone offer advice or guidance on what to expect please.

Thanks x

  • Hi Miss Mushroom

It is a shame that your dad wants to keep his medical information private...this can't be easy for you or your family.

I'm not sure how much advice or guidance the forum members can offer, as we aren't medics, but we can offer our own experiences. My 'guess' is that the 'small operation' your dad is waiting for may be a biopsy, so that the doctors can determine whether he needs further treatment or not. As he only has the one kidney, I'm sure they'll do their very best for him!

The Macmillan helpline is probably the best place to get more information and advice about your dad's situation.

I do hope your dad will be more forthcoming so that you can plan together as a family, and help support him.

    hugs

    Kate
