Hi I was just wondering if anyone opted for a biopsy first before having a removal of the kidney? So I’ve met 2 dr’s at one hospital who said a full removal will be best. My tumour is 7.5cm they said it’s stage 1 no spread and contained only to kidney. They did say there is a small chance a laparoscopic exam may confirm it’s not cancerous.
when I met with another dr at another hospital today they were keen to do a biopsy first, because of my age (40) and to know what they are dealing with. He did say the kidney will still need to be removed due to size of tumour. Because I had worked myself up for the operation and not a biopsy I’ve decided to go for the operation. I just wondered if people did have the biopsy first did you get told anything different. Thanks
Hi,
I had stage 1 kidney cancer just needing removal of kidney. They did a biopsy first to confirm what they were dealing with - almost took longer to do all the paperwork beforehand than the biopsy itself. Was really straightforward. Don’t think the information they gained would have changed anything, but it did confirm that it was definitely cancer.
Just do whatever works for you.
Hiya. Stage 3a tumour, kidney removed. I wasn't aware I had a choice regarding a biopsy. It did seem like a long day in hospital, I thought I would just pop in and go home but the prep was just like a full on operation. So if you opt for the biopsy it's a full day job. Hope everything goes well.
Thanks for the replies :-) I decided not to go for the biopsy. Just because the kidney still needs to come out and they will be doing a biopsy when out aswell, so I didn’t want to be poking at it haha. I’ve had tests done on the kidneys to see how well functioning and they my pre op is also booked so I’m hoping maybe my op might be next week.
Good luck, to be honest I wasn't prepared for the biopsy and it was uncomfortable to say the least and when he said ,I'll just take another, it made my eyes water. They should say bring a stick to bite on.
