HH recovery weeks

We seem to be doing ok, 4 weeks since last chemo and radios. 2 steps forward, 1 back, as I had read we would!  and sometimes he does too much!  Over confidence needs managing!

Can anyone tell me a bit about the dentistry side of things - as you'll see we are navigating this while in Greece, so not much info forthcoming.  I was aware that in the UK he'd have or had a cancer dental assessment...now he is suffering with 'floating' tooth ache, and sensitive softs gums, some days on the left some on the right, so hoping it may 'settle'  I am sure i have read that no dental treatment is advised after radio/chemo..can anyone tell me how long a period that should be for...???

We got him the strong Duraphat 5000 ppm Toothpaste which he's moved onto 1 week ago.

Have a fantastic dentist, a close pal too, so sending HH 'home' at least for this may be a thing, at the correct time...???

16th Feb - thanks for the replies over the w/e...all really helpful stuff.

  • Hi. Just wait until your husbands mouth settles a bit before a visit to the dentist. Use a soft toothbrush and make sure he mouthwashes often to keep his teeth clean. I seem to remember it was a few months before I went to my dentist and had a quick gentle clean and a fluoride varnish.

  • His mouth will still be very sore and the pain may be where the RT has hit his jaw.  2 years on and I still get discomfort around a molar at the back which took the full force of the RT going in.  I am used to it now.

The hospital will want to do any serious dental work.  My dentist needed to do some fillings recently to help with my front teeth which were wearing down due to all the chewing I am doing.  They needed the OK from the hospital oral surgeons  before doing the work, which they got.  In many cases it is things like extractions which can impact on the bones that are the real concern rather than fillings.  Most dentists will know what they can do and when they need a referral.

Ah - over confidence.  I know that well.  It is frustrating, but he needs to learn to allow time to be his friend.  I speak from experience!

  • Hi I popped into see my dentist after treatment but she wanted me to wait until mouth tad settles around 4-5 months then like Dani she did  a check and a very gentle  clean and fluoride varnish. As long as he’s having a nap when he needs one don’t let him overdo it as if can catch up with him when he least expects it. Convalescence is an old word but it’s true our bodies need time to recover look at this article snd get him to read it.

  • 3 monthly dental checks at the dental hospital for me in the two years after chemoradio, then discharged to my own dentist for further 6 monthly checks...already had a couple of fillings carried out.

  • My husband had a 15 hrs operation in January for upper mandibular alveolar scc stage 3, with removal of cancer in mouth and throat, skin flap from forearm into mouth and neck dissection to remove neck lymph nodes. Two lymph nodes near carotid artery couldn't be removed, hence the need for chemo radiotherapy starting next week. Very daunting and he needs a RIG TUBE insertion for feeding. Anyone else been through similar, please?
