Hi All

Happy new year (& there must have been times we have all wondered if we would say that again - so very thankful)

I am nearly 3 years post treatment & all is pretty good, thanks to great hospital staff, friends & family &, I truly believe, a positive mental attitude. (& obviously you guys xxx)

Eating is pretty good - I have just eaten my sandwich, albeit I do need a cuppa soup to help it along but can eat most things (Red wine is still a NO however!)

Just a couple of small things I would like to ask, if you could offer any insight? (compared to peoples actual, real problems, these points seem trite.

  • Neck muscle spasms - sometimes my neck muscle, usually the treatment side, goes into spasm & feels like my neck is going to lock up. I obviously change position before anything happens but it can be quite unnerving - is this usual or anything I need to be concerned with?
  • Neck cracking - usually once a day, usually when sat on the sofa at the end of the day, I will move my head & an almighty CRACK comes from my neck. It doesn't hurt but it is so forceful (& loud) that it is really un-nerving. Not actually an issue but someone might be saying "that is a symptom of. . . . & you need to get it looked at".
  • Neck exercises - I still do these 5 times a week, is it something I need to continue with or do less or more of?

As I say my concerns are ridiculous compared to many on here for which I am thankful & very humble but that said anyone at the start of the journey, which is long & tough please note that I was there & now my concern is about my neck cracking, so stick with it & you to will be a moany sod like me!

I wish you all luck & good health wherever you are on this journey X

  • Neck exercises - I still do these 5 times a week, is it something I need to continue with or do less or more of?

Sorry can’t help with the other two but this one yes. Neck exercises once or twice a day PLUS all your swallow and jaw exercises once a day for ever. I still do mine seven years later.

I wish you all luck & good health wherever you are on this journey X

    You too… hugs

  • I can say that I get the neck spasms.  These come from my dissection and are directly related to the surgical site.  They predate CRT by many years.  I have learned to control them now and they do not worry me.  I just relax and they pass.  They are not frequent , maybe a couple of times a month.  As to the other 2 issues I have not experienced either the cracking or continue doing the physio exercises from years ago.  However, I have always tried to incorporate any physio into the way I normally act rather than a discrete activity so maybe I am doing them subconsciously.

  • Glad to hear that you are doing so well. I did get the neck spasms for a while. It would happen out of the blue depending on how I had turned my neck and then I would massage it and it would seem to twang and relax. It did go away after a while but was rather annoying at the time. Don't get the neck cracking but completely unrelated my spine does a crack when I get in and out of the car sometimes. Nothing to do with anything so maybe your neck cracking is the same.

  • Hi yes to neck exercises and swallow/jaw exercises. They are for life I do mine without even noticing they fit into my daily schedules just like brushing my teeth.

cant help with neck cracking but I do have a small amount of neck fibrosis it doesn’t effect my daily living it’s manageable it’s not progressed over the years.
    best wishes
