Hi Ali
I haven't been on here for a while, I had tonsil cancer that had spread into my lymph node. I had radio therapy and chemotherapy, and spent 2 weeks in hospital. But that was 3 years ago and I am doing really well.
The issue I'm having now relates to my dentist. I have always had a NHS dentist, however despite me visiting 4 times in 6 weeks before my diagnosis they completely missed my cancer. When I emailed them to inform them of my diagnosis. They didn't respond.
I decided to change dentist, however due to the lack of NHS dentist I have had to go private, something I'm not happy about. But I have no option.
However, I have an infection under an old crown that needs replacing and I've been told by my private dentist that she can't do this and needs to refer me to another private dentist and the cost will be be between £800 and over £1000.
I was told that this work could be done under NHS, through the dental hospital but I don't meet the criteria due to my teeth not being decayed.
The dentist I go to is mainly NHS, they will accept new NHS patients but only those who can access free treatment.
When I was first diagnosed I had 3 teeth removed, and since then a further 3 have had to be removed due to breaking. I'm desperate to keep my remaining teeth and attend the dentist and hygienist regularly.
I'm reaching out to see if anyone else has been through something similar.
Thanks,
Sue

I haven’t but what I can say is that you must never let any dentist apart from st your hospital to do ANY invasive treatment to your teeth and jaw. This is a job for your hospital so contact your CNS and explain what’s happening.
You DO meet the criteria as you’ve had radiotherapy.

Hi Dani
Thank you so much for responding, I have a hospital appointment in 2 weeks, I will discuss then. I couldn't believe it when she said,
"I can see infection and it won't go away without treatment".
I wasn't even offended antibiotics.
I will update the forum
Thanks again

Try to bring that forward. You should be on antibiotics now. There is a risk of ORN if the infection gets into your jaw

Hello sue, When I had 7 weeks radiotherapy for ca.back of tongue in 2017 the dental hospital I was referred to after radiotherapy gave me a printed information sheet that said if ever I needed a tooth extracted it must be done by a maxillo facial surgeon. That was in London. I now live elsewhere however I gave this information to my ( new now private) dentist and they have recently referred me to a maxillo facial surgeon at a general hospital who copies all the scans and reports to my GP. They did special x-rays and scans for late effects of radiotherapy on teeth and mandible (jawbone) and treatment is pending another appointment. As you have had radiotherapy and lost teeth It might be worth asking your GP if they can refer you to an nhs hospital dental service for a thorough check up including advice about treatment for your problem tooth. Just an idea, hope it helps.
I was referred by my private dentist to one who was trained in managing clients who had received radiotherapy when I needed an extraction. He got in contact with my radiotherapy doctor and got all the info about my radiotherapy before he would proceed. The extraction was successful with no issues afterwards. I had to do this privately as things are done a bit differently in Australia. The thing in common is that no regular dentist should touch you when you need more extensive dental work and they should refer on to the dentist with the appropriate experience.
I now go to the Dental Hospital for all my dental needs as things have progressed for me and I am eligible for their services. Certainly helps the budget.
