Hubby is doing pretty well after week 3.5 of radiation treatment for hpv tonsil cancer.  He continues to eat, but everything tastes horrible.  He was able to go to a basketball game a few nights ago and still drives to daily treatment.  We are home for the weekend for some much needed rest.  Being around our children and grandchildren is getting us through!! Two weeks to go!

  • Hi So glad to hear your husband is doing so well. Enjoy your well earnt rest. Nice to hear that he's no had any of the awful side affects yet, long may it last.

I have hpv tonsil cancer but have been offered TORS robotic surgery. I go in on tuesday for my neck dissection and then 26th for main op.

Good luck for the next few weeks.

  • He has had many side effects, but is dealing with it pretty well, some days better than me!

Good luck with your surgery!  I hope all goes well!!

  • Nearly there....just tick off those days. In six weeks you'll see a much better man.

  • Glad he is doing so well.  I managed right up until the last week then all came crashing down, mainly because I was stubborn.  I did stop driving a little earlier when I went onto opioids - better safe than sorry.

Hopefully he will be one of the few that get through relatively unscathed, but just in case he does not, make sure that he does not fight the symptoms.  There is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of in taking heavyweight painkillers and having help to feed.  Just take the easiest path as soon as necessary and it will most definitely aid long term healing.  All the best.

  • Thanks for your encouragement.  It's just what I needed this morning!!

  • Thanks for your encouragement!  I am worried about these last 2 weeks.  He is only taking extra strength tylenol and ibuprofen at this point.  The worst part is the change in taste.  He is eating a little over 2000 calories a day.  How long will it take for his taste to come back?

  • Hi just remeber once treatment finishes it does continue to work for a few weeks after. If he needs stronger painkillers get them there’s nothing wrong as Peter says in taking them.  Just be wary your car insurance may be void if he continues to drive whilst taking strong  relief. My oncologist said cancers bad enough cancer and pain is unacceptable. Make sure on the last week of treatment you’ve  everything prescribed as sometimes our gp isn’t as forthcoming as we would like with meds..

best wishes for next few weeks

  • Taste varies there’s no one size it’s all. I am the odd ball as my taste didn’t go but I had still have on some things accentuated taste, which is just bad l general rule of thumb around z12 weeks post treatment some things are manageable but as we all know one week we can eat something)ng on,y to find  a few days later the same thing and no way could we eat. That was very frustrating as we threw lots of food away a( well my hubby ate for 2 some days a) ate his and mine.
I took the attitude that food was fuel and calories helped me make a good recovery. Week to we flew to Spain for 3 weeks hubbys 60 th we have our apartment there so that made it easier eating wise I couldn’t eat out but used promise there with a water and occasionally nibbled someth7ng. We ate all different n treatment and recovery b

  • I have been thinking about his post treatment recovery.  It will be a relief to be back at home as his treatment is 3 and a half hours away.  We stay with our daughter during the week and come home on weekends. Even though it will be a relief to be home, it may be a bit scary as the doctor is far away and the distraction of our children and grandchildren won't be there.

  • Hi  make sure the hospital send his medication through to gp. There’s nothing worse on a Friday needing something. I was on at end of week 3 it happened more or less overnight the soon snd swallow. . Recovery I slept a lot those first 2 weeks. in a way you’re happy to be away from the hospital but in another way you feel like the lifeline that you’ve seen nurses and doctors daily weekly to be thrown into the wilderness and left on your own. I was thonking  make sure you have the number of his Cancer nurse or email address just in case you need anything
