SSP ending

Hi Everyone

I've now been on sick 6 months and naturally my sick pay has come to an end.

I'm about to start radiotherapy soon but have no choice but to return to work and work round my daily sessions.

I live alone and there's nobody who could support me and ESA isn't an option as I couldn't go without money for nearly 3 months as this is the current waiting time for new claims.

Has anyone managed to work whilst having daily sessions?

I'm panicking as I don't know what else I can do to support myself financially.

  • Hi Hazel, no chemo as I'm not allowed to have it. Just radio and because the primary tumour has been successfully removed and all the lymphs, there were only cells apparent in 2 lymphs. They did show possible movement to the surrounding tissue but I'm hoping the sessions won't need a full course as we won't be treating a tumour. More precautionary. I currently live with chronic fatigue, that's something I've had since I was 17 (I'm 51 now) and already have mouth ulcers/sores so I'm used to eating with a very inflamed tissue. I think as you say, because it is so different for everyone, I really am going to have to wait and see. Hopefully work round things in my own time.

  • Do call the macmillan helpline at the bottom of my post. It might be worth contacting the Citizens Advice Bureaux too

  • I contacted the MacMillan team and this is what they say

it would be a good idea for them to call the Support Line.

The Money and work teams will ask for some information about their personal finances and more about their situation. They will then assess what help they can access. Most of the time the team takes on advocacy work so if they have issues claiming something they will do everything they can to make sure someone has the help they need. There are also the Energy Advice teams and Financial Guides who can look at any schemes to help with bills and mortgages, life insurance etc.

    Hi Dani

Cancer can be a finance killer, eats away at savings, we worry about dependants who will only receive half of our pension if the worst were to happen, there is really very little Macmillan can do, it may be time for the UK Gov to look at how they can better help not just  cancer sufferers but others in a similar situation.

I will probably send this communication to my MP and MSP....but will not expect any action to be taken. sympathy Yes...action No.

  • Thanks Dani , it's very kind of you. In real life my job is actually Deputy Officer and I look after vulnerable adults in the community to safeguard against financial abuse. Applying for benefits and working closely with UC and DWP is part of that so I actually know I am entitled to LWC but that would be all. This still takes 3 months to be assessed by which time I would expect to be back at work on phased return and even Citizens Advice state it is better to return phased as it is highly likely you would recieve more money and immediately.  Under the disability discrimination act it is my employers responsibility to make allowances to assist my return. I do have a suggestion to put to them whereby I could do limited/phased hours taking advantage of annual leave as part. I won't state who my employer is but it does not benefit them to refuse, let's put it that way!

I missed all this as I was retired but I grieve for people caught this way. Coping with the fear and the horrendous treatment is enough.
There’s not enough money to go round. What do you do?

  • found this on Gov website..

If your Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) is due to end

You can apply for New Style ESA up to 3 months before your SSP ends. You’ll start getting New Style ESA as soon as your SSP ends.

  • As Dani stated re my reply on ESA, I'm not technically unemployed to have a successful application and no new applications are accepted,  I would have to apply for UC but would get LWC. Despite I would get back pay it is still 3 months with no income.  Sadly my employer has sent a form for ESA, they are required to send it 7 days before SSP stops,  which they didn't. That said, they haven't even filled in the part they're supposed to because I have a job.
