  • You shouldn’t need to see your GP. Just fill out an E Consult and tell them about your cancer. The practice nurse will do your bloods and you’ll just get a report back on the phone

  • Hi We’re you on a trial ? As I know the pet neck 2 trial is a pet ct scan at end of year one. You don’t see a consultant unless you’ve an issue then they  will see you within 2 weeks. I haven’t had a pet ct scan since my scan week 18.
As for  thyroid that’s checked annually by hospital  now discharged so g o does thyroid and cholesterol.

    Hope you’re well

  • No it’s daft. I had to work that one out myself. I think we should all be told on discharge.
When I asked about carotid damage I was told to keep my cholesterol and bp down to protect myself from atheroma. The idea of a Doppler was mine. I wouldn’t mind checking them out anyway.
It’s not simple though. The NHS doesn’t normally check unless you’ve had symptoms ( ie a stroke or a TIA)

It would be useful to know in advance how much risk I’m at.

  • Thank you Hazel, this is really useful as my pre-treatment scan showed thyroid nodules and my one- year review is coming up - I'll ask about thyroid function test. I'll also ask about carotid atherosclerosis which I see is a common late effect.

    How you're doing well!

  • Hi Hazel, I am back on the forum after a long absence precisely because of thyroid issues my husband is having. He has never been offered a regular thyroid test after surgery and radiotherapy for tongue cancer. 6 months ago a routine blood test detected cholesterol issues which seem to be due to his thyroid more or less stopping working. He is now taking thyroid supplements to address the cholesterol, but despite him pointing out that radiotherapy may have damaged his thyroid no-one at the GP is open to the idea that he should be checked over by the H&N specialists or referred back to the H&N cancer clinic. Does anyone on here know whether he ought to be referred? I am a bit concerned about other symptoms he is developing - such as sore throat - but don't want to worry him unnecessarily by suggesting going back to an environment which he finds traumatic.
