My partner is going through radiotherapy for cancer at the back of his tongue. He's had 10 treatments so far with another 20 to go. He wants to eat but his mouth is already so painful it's agony to swallow anything. Soup that he managed to get down 2 days ago now tastes disgusting. I'm at my wits end and so worried how he's going to cope with another 20 sessions.
He will cope, and so will you. He needs your support, strength and positivity. Speak to your radiotherapy team, dietician and nurse. If he has a feeding tube now is the time to start using it. It is a horrible experience but it is worth it . All the best. Liz x
Hi he will cope as he’s no choice. I did it I was 61 if he’s a feeding tube use it if not he may need a ng tube I had one week 3 it was a life saver. As for food beat advise forget about any pleasure from food I took the mantra food is fuel for a good while afterwards as well. Look after yourself cas well as we found my hubby was my rock throughout my treatment and recovery he did literally everything for me.
blog below might help.

He said he could cope if everything was bland but a lot of things suddenly taste disgusting. Also the roof of mouth is extremely painful and obviously his throat.
Yes sadly par for the course the treatment destroys our mucosal linings taste buds and just about everything in our mouths including salivary glands . For me the overwhelming taste was metal and salt He can ask for gelclair to help with the mouth burning and ulcers that will be forming g. Some trusts offer caphosol mine didn’t I used lukewarm water salt and baking powder rinse.

Been there done this. This is how it is I'm afraid. Itscgets a lot worse before it get better. We do get through it, taste is months away, salivarynandcrevolting mouths are the order of the day. Imreckon I have shares in kleenex, I use so many, everything including water is revolting. Might need to look at a feeding tube. I lost 3.5 stone and had to have a pump. I'm now awaiting surgery to try and sort out a musclecspasm that is stopping me eating. It's a long, long journey. We need all the support we can get!!!!!!
Hi Val. As the others have said you will both cope because you have no choice. Please make sure his radiographers know exactly how he is feeling. By week 4 ( 18 treatments) I had a nasogastric tube fitted so that I didn’t have to swallow. Adding proper pain relief in long acting morphine twice daily and oramorph through the day was a real game changer.
I pump fed at night leaving the days free to try to be human.
Somehow I finished but I was exhausted at the end. I didn’t lose much weight so kept well nourished ( forced myself to eat past the no/revolting taste) and made a fairly uneventful recovery

he knows it's only going to get worse.
Yes I’m afraid it will but ……..
Is there no chance of having a feeding tube? My trusts policy was clear. No PEG or RIG but an NG tube as soon as you couldn’t swallow.
They take minutes to fit and it’s only a little unpleasant. You need a little training g to use it but that’s a doddle

Another thing I could add regarding your thread title
I can only say what happened in my case but I’m sure it can be applied to lots of people
My husband didn’t feel useless. He knew I could do it and helped with practical things. He couldn’t take my pain and didn’t make noises about not being able to. I wouldn’t have wanted him to because it would have given me him to worry about as well as myself and he understood that. We are a partnership and we help each other without question. That’s a given and there us no guilt about it.
Recently he had a heart attack. I bundled him into the car and drove him straight to A&E then just stepped back. He’s had a few extra cuddles though
