Hi,

So i went deaf and got tinnitus after my op in December (maxillectomy reconstruction of palate). under maxfax team. Finally got to see ENT today, he said nothing much they can do, i have fluid behind my ear drum. They can put grommets in but it wint be a permanent fix as the grommets will fall out after 12-18m or so. It will be better to just have a hearing aid. This will obvs help my hearing but nit my tinnitus (which i find very debilitating). Has this happened to others, I thought id get sorted :(

i have difficulty swallowing although better than ut was. He looked and said i have stagnant secretions nasophartnx (Ewww)! Anyone has this? He suggested nasal washouts?

im 5m post radiotherapy and still have pain in neck jaw especially after speaking, is this usual?

Nothing really in comparison to what many of you are dealing with, thanks x

  • Hi Elaine

Yes I did have radiotherapy. but did not have pain in my jaw or trouble with swallowing. However for my first maxillectomy could only manage very soft foods, mostly puree. I had a second maxillectomy but no radiotherapy this time. I can only manage puree now but have no difficulty with swallowing.

I think you will find that with time things will settle down.

  • Hi again Elaine

Just thinking about your reference to ‘stagnant secretions’ and the recommendation to try a saline nasal flush. Is this because you have blocked sinuses?

Since my maxillectomies I always have some difficulty breathing and have a ‘blocked’ nose.

I wasn’t warned about this by my surgeon but as the structures are no longer there that keep the sinuses open there is a tendency for things to drop down and partially block them. (Not sure if that is quite right anatomically but ask your surgeon) Consequently no matter how much you blow your nose or try and clear your sinuses it doesn’t happen. It does improve slightly but it has never completely cleared for me.

However, maybe you are referring to something else.

For me I have got used to this but maybe you don’t have the same issue.

  • Oh im not sure? He didnt say? The secretions seem to be at the back of nose/too of throat. Bit like carrarh but higher up. Nose doesn’t feel blocked at all. I used the soray but isnt clearing it, just runs down my throat. When i saw on the camera, gross blob of mucus just sat there? Hope no one is eating whilst reading this, apologies! Im seeing my surgeon tomorrow so hopefully he can shed light onto it, im gonna ask for the grommets first, thanks xx

Hi I had a grommet in one ear and it definitely helped and then the chemotherapy treatment restored my hearing fully apart from the tinnitus which does still effect my hearing.
