Hi,
So i went deaf and got tinnitus after my op in December (maxillectomy reconstruction of palate). under maxfax team. Finally got to see ENT today, he said nothing much they can do, i have fluid behind my ear drum. They can put grommets in but it wint be a permanent fix as the grommets will fall out after 12-18m or so. It will be better to just have a hearing aid. This will obvs help my hearing but nit my tinnitus (which i find very debilitating). Has this happened to others, I thought id get sorted :(
i have difficulty swallowing although better than ut was. He looked and said i have stagnant secretions nasophartnx (Ewww)! Anyone has this? He suggested nasal washouts?
im 5m post radiotherapy and still have pain in neck jaw especially after speaking, is this usual?
Nothing really in comparison to what many of you are dealing with, thanks x
Elaine
Hi Elaine. What I would do is see an audiologist. There must be a better way than what your ent is suggesting.
Stagnant secretions might improve yet.
Jaw ache? Well it’s early days, very early days. I’m sure that will get better.
Did you have RT in the end. My heads like a sieve and you don’t t mention it in your profile.

HunElaine my hubby got a referral for hearing aids to an audiologist from our g p. His hearing loss was work related not cancer related. He says it’s best thing he s done can hear me shouting at him now lol. As for your jaw it’s early days if I talked too long and too much my heavily radiated side lower jaw aches. Give it time.
How are you in general have you returned to work yet ?

Thanks Hazel,
im more bothered with the tinnitus tbh rather than hearing loss! Drives me nuts. Im fit as a fiddle from shoulders down lol. Back to work this week on a phased return, i talk all day and full time usually so starting off gently. How you doing? Xx
hiw do i get to see an audiologist?
Get your GP to refer you.
If there really us nothing then your suggestion of grommets then hearing aid seems sensible. Who knows. The grommets might do the trick even when they fall out.

Hi Elaine
After my first maxillectomy in 2019 I had hearing loss in my left ear from a build up of fluid. My surgeon put a grommet in to drain the fluid and it worked really well. I had the grommet in for about 2 years and he then took it out for me as it did not drop out. I have not had any trouble with my hearing since.
He also referred me to an audiologist after putting the grommet in to check my hearing. There were no issues and I passed the test with full marks.
I would definitely go with the grommet first to see if that helps before worrying about hearing aids.
I did not have tinnitus so can’t comment on that but I’m sure the audiologist would be able to help.
Hope you get a good result.
