Good morning everyone
Before I began my Radiotherapy treatment, dentists at the hospital removed my 2 bottom wisdom teeth and a loose incisor from the top row
I have now received an appointment with Restorative Dentistry
Does anyone have a similar experience?
What can they do and would I be better seeing my own private dentis
Thank you
Alfredo
Hello Alfredo - I had an appointment made for me with restorative dentistry. It was in the hospital where I received radiotherapy and chemotherapy for the tumour I had in my tonsil T4N1M0. I found it to be very helpful as the dentist clearly went through all the instructions for me to follow in the future care of my teeth. This included special products one can use to help strengthen and protect radiated teeth. He will continue to check my teeth at regular intervals for at least one year.
I still see my regular dentist but he can’t see very well into my mouth because of the trismus I have .
I believe seeing the restorative dentist is useful, and it doesn’t stop you seeing your own dentist as well.
I hope that is helpful to you,
good wishes,
bennym
Hi Alfredo. Keep your appointment. It will as Benny said be to check you over and discuss oral care going forward. It gets you in the system should you need any invasive treatment. Radiotherapy leaves the bone circulation in the jaw in the line of fire compromised and osteoradionecrosis is a lifelong threat albeit a very small one. Never let your dentist perform any invasive treatment. This must be done in hospital where they are aware of your radio dose.
Having said that my own dentist has crowned a tooth since RT
Nit only do I use high fluoride toothpaste but I have a fluoride varnish every three months.

In my life, there were no horror stories associated with dentists, but there was an incident that outraged me. Due to my habit of chewing candy, I broke several teeth in a month, and there were cavities. I was too lazy to go to the doctor; I forgot about these teeth until I felt a wild pain. The dentist periodically put fillings on these teeth for 2 years, but after another doctor's examination, I learned that these teeth had to be urgently removed, not treated. I quickly went to https://thehealthysmile.net/dental-services/implant-dentistry-bay-village-ohio/ to get dental implants, and I'm now in my second week of recovery.
Hi BennyM
I had Trismus after my operation, and seeing the dentist was impossible. I had to use a baby toothbrush and even that was difficult. Speak to your cancer nurse or speech therapist to see if they can get you a therobite . It will help in about 3 months my mouth went from 5cm to 25cm . It will never be perfect but I now see my dentist and hygienist . It’s a really good piece of equipment
Hi Bennym
I tried the sticks and it was too painful to get them in. It’s a brilliant gadget expensive if you purchase it about £450, but you should be able to get one. Measured again today and now on 30 so I think that’s probably the best I can achieve. Keep it in mind :)
They can do wat ur own dentist can do but better in my opinion. I been going to them.. same as you had all upper out and a 3 bottom..i think they got more experience. Good luck wat ever you decide
