Hi. I’m week 13 post treatment. Eating is improving. Managed a couple of slices of pizza yesterday & a roast potato. Just looking for advice on oral hygiene. I use high fluoride toothpaste & always floss. Can anyone recommend suitable daily mouthwash please or any other products I haven’t heard of. Many thanks.

  • Hi Blod

Best speak with your clinical nurses they should be able to prescribe something, I am prescribed-on prescription- Chlorhexidine gluconate 0.2% twice daily, if you don't want it on prescription it is easily available in shops, both expensive-Corsodyl - and cheap but both the same just look for the description.

    Hope this helps

  • Hi

I use Duraphat toothpaste x 2 daily (not much though as it still stings) and Fluoroguard mouthwash from Boots x 1 daily (in the middle of the day, not when I brush my teeth). I dilute it because otherwise it stings too much. I rinse with warm water and use interdental brushes immediately after food

  • Hi Merrygoround I use bioxtra mouth wash its very gentle and available on prescription plus is ph neutral I’ve been using us for 4 years. I also always have oranurse in stock for those days when duraphat it too much. I have to buy that one. Plus at the dentist every 3 months I have a fluoride varnish.
well done on pizza and roast potatoes I found roast potato or sweet potato easier than potato mash for a good while.

  • Hi Blod. I can second BioXtra mouthwash. It actually has more fluoride than any others you can buy. It’s very mild and moisturising. I prefer interdental brushes to floss. I was advised to brush before breakfast to remove overnight plaque. I use Oranurse for this as I don’t want to be swallowing yet more fluoride from the Duraphat. After that I’ll clean with brushes and swish with BioXtra.
A water pic might be useful. I didn’t get on with mine but lots of people like them.
Fluoride varnish at the dentist every three months.
Before bed GGMI paste plus is very useful. It has recaldent to recalcify enamel and yet more fluoride. Orthodontists recommend it. It isn’t cheap but you don’t need much

Last thing. Xylimelts to tuck into your cheek to keep your mouth moist at night.

  • Hi Blod. I was advised by my new dentist to use interdental brushes once a day rather than floss. Different colours for different sized gaps are apparently very effective - and easier to use. He had a good look at my teeth, including an X-ray with a thyroid collar on. Good news - no sign of decay 18 months post-treatment.  Bad news plenty of gingivitis going on in there which can lead to tooth loss. He said to reuse the i/d brushes for as long as they last, as long as you rinse them afterwards. Just like you’d reuse your toothbrush. I now have a new morning routine where I use interdental brushes between my teeth then finish by brushing with toothpaste before breakfast.  I then lightly brush with Duraphat toothpaste on a very soft toothbrush after breakfast. No rinsing before spitting, of course. Takes about ten minutes each morning.

  • So with Duraphat how long do you leave it before rinsing etc?

  • You don't rinse. Spit and that's it and don't eat or drink for 30 minutes.

  • As Dani says, don’t rinse. The paste needs to stay coated on your teeth to do its stuff. In fact received wisdom now is that no-one should rinse after brushing their teeth. It feels weird to start with but you soon get used to it.

Yes. That’s what my dentist told me even before I was ill. Also brush before breakfast
