Hi everyone, can anybody suggest anything for burning/sore tongue & sore soft pallet, the mouthwashes I have don’t seem to be helping as they sting even with extra water , painkillers not really TOUCHING it either .Week 1 post radiotherapy & never felt as groggy as I do now , just when I was starting to eat a bit of yoghurt orally too , everything seems to sting .Does this settle down at all ? HAZEL you were right , as usual XX

  • I did get up each day, but slept lots.

The stinging was awful, when people were saying try soups, shakes, etc they meant well but just didn't get it. I was better with soft solids once I could swallow again, I could avoid my ulcers with them.

The not eating is hard, physically and emotionally. Our lives revolve so much around food. When you can't eat it seems to be everywhere. I remember falling out with my step mum over some daft image she sent me. It was joking about people eating outside in the rain when pubs opened again after lockdown. I replied it wouldn't be me because I can't eat. I haven't had a single daft photo from her since!

This is the toughest bit you are in. Once your mouth has healed a bit more eating will get better. I know you're off the pain relief but I needed some 30 mins before eating, then difflam 15 mins before. I kept the aspirin rinse for after.

Hazel, Dani & co got me through it. You'll get there too.

    Take care, Gill xx

  • Aly, are you doing your mouth and throat exercises? They are important to stop your jaw seizing up. I still do mine.

  • That's so lovely of you to say. Your common sense and attitude got you through. I remember when you said you were going back to teaching so soon. I thought that was wonderful. Hope life is good for you, Gill.

You helped countless people too, you know. I still direct people to your blog.

  • Hi Aly it’s one Of those things we have to do for life like using duraphat. I do mine without thinking about it now.

  • Hi Dani,

Thanks. Yep, life is good. Been back at work a year next week. Took about 8 months to get into the swing of it. Much better at knowing my limits and saying no these days!

We've got our 3rd post cancer holiday coming up soon, with Pip and granddaughter in tow. Loving my dog walks on the Chase and the veg plot looking healthy again this year.

Aside from the usual no curries, lots of water and keeping up the jaw exercises more or less the old me. Just much more chilled, pragmatic and take self care seriously.

Hoping to finally get blog up to date this summer!

    Take care, Gill x

  • Wonderful news. Gill
