3 Years on, opposite side of face to where I had treatment is puffy?

Sorry, not posted here for a while

It's now almost exactly 3 years on from when I was 1st told I had jaw cancer

A lot happened in the 1st few months; half of lower jaw removed, rebuilt with bone from leg, neck dissection, 33 radio and 2 chemo but now cancer free for 2 years

Everything is pretty good, but what I am noticing is the opposite side to where I had my treatment is puffy and skin around my neck and face is loose

Could this be related to treatment in anyway or is it more a case of I need to watch my weight

My bad side looks better than my good side

  • Hi Terry

It might be lymphodema but you know the sensible thing would be to give your CNS a ring and have it looked at.

I think it's always a good idea to get any changes checked. Your team won't mind false alarms.

  • Thanks

After looking back through old photos it looks like it has always been like it, noticed it more because the last photo was particularly horrible.

It's possibly due to my bottom jaw is set back more now and I have a lot more of an overbite which makes the skin on my neck (opposite side to treatment) looser

Made it to Christmas, made it to my birthday, had a nice summer, made it to my 2nd (and 3rd) Christmas now writing a blog about my treatment - https://www.1in1440.co.uk/april-2018-you-have-cancer/
  • Hello Penrod, so sorry about the late reply but for some reason, your post did not come through to the head and neck group which makes it quite embarrassing. I had the same operation as you back in 2009 and have not had this happen to me, it could well be to do with the lymph nodes not draining the fluids so you are getting a build-up, maybe they could be infected as it does happen in some cases. Or could be a muscle problem in the skin, it does not sound like anything sinister but please get it checked, will be interested in the outcome, all the best.

Terry's post was flagged up at admin......I couldn't see it in the forum either till I clicked on the highlighted link.

That's a really good tip. Take pictures and then you can compare and see if something really is new.

If I spot something I can't recall seeing before I take a snap and see if its the same three weeks later
