End of external beam radiotherapy and follow up

Good evening.

Few weeks ago I have asked for advice about throat pain. Lots of you mentioned that feeding tube was a God send.

So yesterday, last day of radiotherapy, no 33, straight after it I was admitted to ward and given NG tube.

I was feeling really down that I was so close to finish the treatment without extreme measures. But I also stopped eating altogether around 4 days ago and was feeling weeker and weeker by the hour.

The plan is to show me how to feed myself at the weekend whilst inpatient and then to let me go home on Monday, if bloods will be OK.

Thank you. Izzy.

  • Hi Izzy I'm sure you will be really pleased with the feeding tube, it's no good trying to soldier on without one. You will need nourishment and lots of water for your recovery and the feeding tube will give you that. I looked at my RIG as a part of the treatment; it was a life saver for me. Once you get used to using your tube, it will just be part of your daily routine.

  • I lost a fair bit of weight prior to finishing treatment... after my third last treatment I was admitted straight into the cancer ward... lost interest in eating... everything was so hard to cope with... my oncology teams were brilliant... would not let me feel sorry for myself...supported me throughout my time on the ward... the real start of my fightback.

  • Hi Izzy.

My NG tube was my friend. I even matched my tops to the colour bands on the tube..

Feeding was easy overnight by pump. No regrets
