Hi All, just wanted to post latest for me from last week. Many thanks for all my replies, they’re very welcome.
Last week started badly! I’d not opened my bowels for 10 days and I ended up in the Emergency assessment unit. I thought it would be a simple case of laxatives-wrong! I was given a saline drip and asked to drink 8 x Laxidose in a litre of water to try and force the compacted poo to move - no good. Up to X-ray for chest and stomach( was shocked to find out that poo can be seen this way).
Sadly, as my white cells were low they couldn’t give an enema which I overheard would be the treatment. So, I was put on the cancer ward overnight to see if the Laxidose or my my bloods improved. Fortunately, the following morning my bloods had recovered enough and an enema was ordered. If you’ve ever had one yourself you’ll know the procedure. Anyway, relief was quick and it worked perfectly and I was sent home that evening with a big bagful of laxatives, antibiotics and an adjusted morphine dose called Zomorf slow release morphine which I’ve found much better than Oromorph
I'm through that period now and just coming up to 21 days post radio/chemo. Its still very tough going at the moment with mucous and dry mouth but I know it’s early days. The only thing that I’ve found strange is taste. The only thing I could taste was coffee, but on Tuesday my taste went “metallic” within a couple of hours and has stayed the same- even water is metal tasting. Has anyone experienced this and more importantly, does it subside? Any comments, observations are most welcome.
Best wishes to all. Tim
Hi Tim
That was an adventure then wasn't it? You poor thing. Morphine based meds are devils for constipation and it's so uncomfortable.
Yes, I had real problems with taste. Everything I ate tasted vile - protein was like eating a bag of coins. Luckily I found Ready Brek and semolina had no taste whatsoever so I had to stick with those. The good news is that awful metallic taste does subside - some people have found within a couple of weeks but for me it was longer.
Glad they've adjusted your pain relief to something that works better for you. Hope you manage to keep your bowels working regularly.
Take care.

Hi Tim, sorry you still have bad tastes with food. I found chocolate milk to be pretty much the only think that wasn't vile ( coconut water was bearable). I lived on this along with fortisips for a good few weeks. I also used to whizz up vanilla ice cream with the fortisips - all in the name of calories.
Hope it resolves soon
Hi Cathy, thanks for your reply. As a chocolate lover it was a go to for me but again just the metallic taste. I will try the coconut water! As for Fortisips it’s uncanny how they taste vile no matter what the state of your taste. As I say I’m only 3 weeks out of treatment and it looks like it can be many months before taste returns. I was hoping there would be some testimonies out there that some patients did retrieve their taste more rapidly to give me a bit of of hope! But heyho, it is. what it is.
Bbest wishes. Tim xx
You may not have to wait months for your taste to return Tim. Many people report an improvement after a couple of weeks. Don't give up. It's important to keep trying small amounts of things and remember, your sense of taste can alter from day to day.

Hi Tim Ouch 10 days I feel your pain , try and get into taking a laxido or whichever they’ve given yiu on a daily basis from now I was ok with 1 a day some use 2.your taste will return some quicker than others , I was lucky I never lost taste but did get metallic mouth. With water I ended uo for months having to bulk buy bottled water as our tap water was disgusting even when filtered.Try ti drink 2-3 litres of water that will help yiu as well.
Keep in top of medication and contending what yiu are doing another 3 weeks or so and you should turn the first corner.
One tip is try and use plastic utensils that can help minimise the metallic taste for a while .
occupy your mind by watching trashy tv if yiu can’t do anything meaningful ,plus try a little walk every day.
ps chocolate was one of the first things that came back to me eating wise nit then healthiest thing but who cares.
Good luck

Hi Hazel, many thanks for your tips. Am on bottled water already but it’s really metallic! I’m on some laxatives that are working thankfully. I’m hoping the taste will return to help my nutrition. As I’ve only been 3 weeks since end of treatment another 3 weeks should pass and hopefully as you say I’ll start to turn a corner. Energy wise, I’m a dead duck and feel elated if I make it up and down the stairs without puffing. Again , am hoping the fatigue will diminish. I will try a short walk tomorrow though. Chocolate would be a dream for me as I had love of it. Would always have some chocolate in the evening with a cup of coffee. Simple pleasures are what I miss!
Will keep you posted best wishes. Tim xx
Hi Tim if it gives you encouragement am sat here with a coffee and few squares if 80% dark chocolate! Radiation fatigue is the pits as counterproductive as it may seem gentle exercise is a good start .Walk 100 yards or so then gradually increase it each day., baby steps some day 2 forwards and one back but you will get there.
Keep in touch Hazel x

Hi Hazel, good to hear from you. Coffee and dark chocolate! Wow, a dream at the moment. Yes the radiation is the culprit at the moment and I’m praying it recedes. Am 3 weeks from last rads today. I sleep well but this is a different sort of “tired” as though your in a trance but awake. I’m gonna try the 100 yd walk today and progress it daily. I’ll keep you posted on it. Any other advice is most welcome.
best wishes Tim xx
