Hi everyone,.

I DID IT.... I RANG THAT BELL!!!

Wow what an emotional day it was yesterday. All protons done. Now have to try and get into a routine as District Nurses coming everyday to re-dress my radiotherapy burns to my neck and just have to get used to ng night feeds, meds and a change of life for a while.

So lovely to have you all here to share this.

  • Well done Lisa

I fed at night propped up on pillows. By six weeks I was eating soft food. Your RT “burns” will improve pretty quickly and in two weeks your skin will just look red.
Baby steps will get you there.
    Keep us updated.
You have been the group’s Guinea Pig ...... in the nicest possible way

    Best wishes xx

Does anyone have any tips for the mouth  secretions? I feel like im choking on them and constantly need a sick bowl...

    Thank you xxx Hearts

  • Ah, bless you Lisa - well done.

  • Keep hydrated so that means 3 litres of water during the day. A humidifier by the bedside might help too. I used to sit over a bowl of steaming water twice a day but some prefer a nebuliser.
Apart from that I managed with a paper bag on the floor and kitchen roll in bed with me and lots of spitting. 14 hours of feed is impressive. The most I ever managed was 8 and half the volume the dieticians were so bloomin keen on forcing down me.

  • Ahhh hi,

So lovely to hear from you. I actually have my review meeting tomorrow.

Its been a bumpty road unfortunately! I was home for a couple of weeks then ended up back in hospital for a week. My body couldnt cope with the pain medication i was on. It was reduced and i was allowed home

I currently have oral thrush. And am on tablets that will hopefully help. At the moment my mouth is very painful and i cant eat anything.

If anyone has any ideas they will be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks.

    Lisa

  • Hi Lisa are you on flucozonole? I it’s the only thing that worked for me. I too  suffered from oral thrush even though my oral hygiene was impeccable. Can you swish lukewarm  water with teaspoon of baking powder or bi carb.  It neutralises your mouth .
sorry to hear you ended up back in hospital.
good luck for tomorrow s consultation.
let us know how you get on.

  • Ouch.

Yes bicarb (I mixed mine with salt as well) is gentle and works well on a tender mouth

Have they given you Antacid with Oxytecaine? That would be useful once the thrush has settled. Two weeks's worth of fluconazole should sort the infection out. It's something that's so common in HNC patients. A change of oral pH and swallowing a high sugar replacement drink is just the environment it thrives in.

Once you can actually tolerate something in your mouth I found these useful in the early days

Best of luck with your review
