  • been plodding along for last 2 years & 8 months, but I think the radiation has taken its toll on my thyroid. Had a nodule there that I found seven years ago, bloods always showed normal function and several FNA were inconclusive however my bloods are now off and I have hypothyroidism ...they suspect the radiation may have damaged thyroid so booked to have a right Hemi Thyroidectomy on Friday. Feeling anxious - throat feels dodgy, worried it’s all come back!

I dont know what’s normal anymore - I’m constantly swallowing to check if it hurts and usually always does.

  • Hi Julesey

That's a bit rotten about your thyroid but it looks like the medics are well on top of things. I hope it's nothing and they just put you on thyroxine.

This swallowing thing....maybe it's just nervous anticipation of the worst case scenario which is only normal and something we all are so familiar with.

    Fingers crossed it's not serious

  • Hello - yes I hope its that but I’ve had it for a while and it feels exactly like tonsillitis that doesn’t go away - it’s like a muscle ache in the base of tongue  and neck (hard to describe) I’m wondering if it’s late effects of treatment and if anyone else has this?

    Kindest regards

  • Hi Julesy

Sorry to hear that you need more treatment. It is a very stressful time for you but put your faith in your medical team and a positive outcome.

I’ve been on thyroxine for years for hypothyroidism but not as a result of radiotherapy.

The radiotherapy is a lifesaver but those side effects can be a problem. Good luck with the thyroidectomy.

  • Hi Julesey

My thyroid also became underactive after radiotherapy and I'm now taking levothyroxine.

Hypothyroidism causes a huge list of symptoms including a sore throat etc.  I also have a constant sore and uncomfortable throat since treatment but whether that's caused by the rt, robotic surgery or whatever I've no idea.

Good luck for Friday.  How long will you be in hospital for?

  • Wave tone3Wave tone3Wave tone3Wave tone3 I’m here - had it Friday and it’s uncomfortable but not like what we’ve all experienced in the past! Nothing compares to that brutal tonsillectomy and RT!

I’m doing ok day two was in overnight, no voice, hoping that comes back. Poor throats taken another battering. Just waiting for results and praying no further treatment needed - I was surprisingly brave...thanks for all the kind messages x
