Hello all, I hope you are all doing well. My partner and I are going abroad in a couple of weeks, I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with lymphoedema and flying? Is my partners neck likely to swell up on the flight? Thank you

  • Hi. I don’t personally but I wouldn’t think the slightly reduced cabin pressure would make much difference. Is your partner doing exercises to help?

  • Hello, yes he is and he has a compression garment but I have just thought about the cabin pressure on the flight and wondered if anyone would know.
    Thank you.

  • Been doing lymphoedema massage for a couple of years now, turkey neck, flown abroad quite a few times, it has never been an issue.

    Enjoy your break.

  • Hi Micky.

My H has been getting lymphoedema flare ups a lot recently - sometimes not too bad but others his cheeks and under the chin get very swollen.  We've started the exercises and massage and next week he's got a hands on appointment with the nurse. I know it's lifelong and we'll keep up with massage, but does it ever improve much?  He assures me there's no pain but it looks uncomfortable.  No turkey neck and I massage E45 in every day.

Just wondered if you've got any tips being a veteran of the condition.  Thanks in advance.

Hopefully yes. I have only a small amount left I am the only one that notices. I think it took about six months of frequent daily massage ( I did it every time I went to the loo...easy to remember) with only the occasional top up in the few months after

  • I flew to the USA in February and I had no issues at all. Did several flights while there. No flareups at all

  • Oh thanks Dani.  That's good to know.  Unfortunately he's lazy, especially when it comes to himself, but I'm more than prepared to do the honours.  He obviously secretly enjoys it!

I'll now up the ante and if he starts getting fed up with it it's tough!  I'll also watch the nurse's techniques as I've only got them on paper as yet.

That made me laugh. You sound like a very formidable opponent

  • It was a little unsightly at the end of the treatment, oncology showed me how to massage the areas affected, worked a treat, still massage daily, only takes a few minutes, usually after shaving.

  • Thanks for the reply Micky.

Yep, H's neck looked messy too as he'd had bilateral dissections.  The scarring isn't too noticeable and once we get on top of the lymphoedema, regular maintenance should hopefully do the trick.

We're looking forward to getting where you are now but realise patience is of the essence.

Enjoy the rest of your day.
