Hi I’m new here. My stepdad has been diagnosed with Carcinoma on tongue. I’m not really sure of where exactly it is but I’m just extremely worried he went for a check in the dentist they referred hito the dental hospital and they did a biopsy which confirmed the cancer he now has been referred to a hospital that specialises in this cancer, They have said they will have to do surgery on the area and he has a mri today and a meeting on Friday and then a PET scan in a few weeks. Is this all normal? Why do they need to do a mri and a Pet scan I don’t understand, I haven’t had the chance to talk to any doctors yet but I’m also too scared to speak to them as I feel like I’m just not sure if I want to hear it all.

  • Hi this is quite normal, Mt husband has tonsil cancer. He had an mri then a pet scan a couple of weeks later. The oet scan is yo determine if it has spread anywhere else.

  • Hi.
An MRI will show the extent of the cancer. Usually there is a little more than you can see with the naked eye and the surgeon needs to know how much to excise to guarantee a good margin of healthy tissue.
A PET/CT is to check for distant spread which would affect the prognosis and treatment. Often oral cancers spread to the lymph nodes in the neck and will need to be either removed or treated with radiation. They don’t often spread distantly which is good news.

I’m also too scared to speak to them as I feel like I’m just not sure if I want to hear it all.

You need to if you are going to help your step dad. Take a deep breath. Cancer is serious but oral cancers has a very good cure rate.

  • Sorry for the spelling. The pet scan is to determine if there's any spread.

  • How is your husband ? Did his pet scan have positive results ? X

  • Hi  thank you so much for the reply. I have so many questions at the moment until I get to speak with the doctor. I’m wondering if the cancer can spread while waiting for the PET scan. And also why are the hospital planning surgery and going through the details and giving him a mri first if bad results from the pet scan that can affect the treatment? I just can’t understand that part xx

  • Yes thank goodness.  It showed there wasn't any spread. We're currently at hospital he's having his radiotherapy as we speak.

  • Hi F11 welcome to the group. Yes, this is all normal, they want to see and get as much info as they can, before they decide on a treatment plan. Any questions just ask, someone will help if they can.

    Ray.

They need to book a slot for surgery and it will have to be done anyway whatever other treatment is planned.
These cancers only very rarely spread distantly but you can understand why the hospital has to make sure.

A few weeks won’t make any difference so try not to worry.
