Hi all,

My mum has neck and oesophagus cancer. Just finished 3 weeks radiotherapy, had one chemo and another one after next week, 7 week altogether.
She wants to know what others with same cancer eat?
She can hardly taste anything and beginning to struggle eating.
Also what foods are best to eat and taste normal in your opinion, appreciate everyone may differ with this?
Please give as much advice as possible with any of this.
It’s best to know from others going through/ gone through all of this.

  • Yes it’s awful but par  for the course. I abandoned eating and fed entirely by tube for 8 weeks

    Hi Lucia

T2N1M0 tonsil cancer HPV16+ CRT finished June 2023

I'm 9 months post Chemoradiotherapy....about 70% of taste has returned.....some things are still truly tasteless....more a question of eating to maintain a healthy BMI....very frustrating time for patients and carers....but things do improve....I'm going for my 3 monthly review tomorrow....seaside lunch afterwards.... just have to be careful about what I order....Haddock and chips are enjoyable ...can do it justice.

As I have stated it takes time....4 weeks in  I was having very small portions (no taste) supplemented with Ensure.

    Take care

    Peter

  • Thanks

I hope you manage to enjoy the fish and chips.
3 months review, is that what most people have after treatment?
most things have not been said, taste- maybe nit ever getting it back etc

  • So in comparison she’s doing okay but won’t see it like that.
How long did you get to eat and taste afterwards then?

  • Can I ask what T2NOMO means please?

Do you know if HPV caused cancer is more curable?
mum not sure if it is or not as Oncologist hasn’t said and my mum does t think it matters to know

  • Hi  it means the cancer is between 2 and 4 cm big and hasn’t spread to lymph nodes it’s what I had

Can I ask what T2NOMO means please?

HPV cancer is very sensitive to radiotherapy. Cure rates are in excess of 90%
    Hold into that.

I started trying soft food at six weeks and could eat enough to thrive at 12 weeks. It was six months before I was happy with my taste but I got improvements for a good few years.

    Hi Lucia

This is my 3rd review after clear PET/CT scan in September....after 2 years reviews go to 6 months....then if all OK  stop on the 5 year mark....

Oncology told me taste should start to return 6-12 months..... but in reality   who knows?

Others on the forum are much farther down the recovery line....more knowledgeable.

  • I could do with knowing what it is and the size of them then.

maybe with cancer in two areas it’s hard to say!?
we know the throat one gone to lymph nodes though

not said either way if it is HPV but worth knowing that, thanks
