Hello
l have just completed 6 weeks of RT daily with 5 lots of chemo over 5 weeks for Tonsillar cancer HPV+. The offending tonsil was removed & used for histology. The final RT was on Friday. Before l ask my question, sincere thanks to every single contributor, it has helped greatly since day 1 of my diagnosis when l began dipping into this website.
During the treatment l managed pretty well. My throat became sore towards the end and taste went out the door; l continued to eat solids, even though they tasted either bland or disgusting. I did not lose any weight until the last week from 54 to 53.6 kilosThe skin on my neck gradually became red and itchy towards the last week of RT. Since then it has worsened & l was given Flamazine to put on it after RT. Equally, l had been managing on soluble paracetamol for pain relief, but was given oramorph to take with it when needed. Since the last session the pain has suddenly gone wild. Equally my neck looks & feels awful. I am taking the oramorph & it does definitely help. Equally, have swapped the soluble paracetamol for liquid as the effervescent bubbles were v painful on my throat. I am using E45 on my throat which is v soothing. I haven’t actually tried the Flamazine yet because l don’t like the sound of the side effects & tbh, the instructions contradict what the Nurse told me about it. Has anyone used it? I am still eating a few solid things with liquid high protein supplements which is manageable. This is a v difficult road to travel but l do feel it is manageable; the helpful tips on here ef. About Xylimelts, liquid paracetamol etc, helped me pre-empt a few things for which l am eternally grateful!
Hi Woodey, likewise I had dreadful burns on my neck following RT 2 years ago. I used flamazine and I think it worked wonders for me. My skin has recovered however I Still do have some paler patches and some itchy areas. Once the flamazine was done I continue to this day to moisturise with Aveeno and slap on the Factor 50 when in the sun.
All the best with your recovery.

Hi Woodey
Much like the others who've replied, I had bad radiation burns to my neck. I was prescribed Flamazine, applied it while wearing surgical gloves which the hospital gave me. It worked like magic in 2 or 3 days, no side effects, just looked a bit of a mess!
Hi Woodey, like others have said Flamazine is great for burns but should only be used for a week - it should have done the job by then! E45 can be drying if used long term as moisturizer but is fine as soap substitute. I used Epimax when my skin was sore and use Aveeno regularly now.. and factor 50. As well as going through this my job is in wound care. All the best in your recovery
Thank you. Have noted your warning about the length of time. Tried it yesterday & seemed to calm down my angry skin. Appreciate the advice.
Hi woody,
my story exactly same as yours, I finished radiotherapy 3 months ago…. My neck and mouth still don’t feel like they belong to me!
District nurse gave me zerobase emollient cream for my dry scabby neck, and it work great, nothing sinister in it.
my taste still not back to normal and don’t enjoy food yet!
you have done great to get this far on so little pain relief, but remember the pain gets worse before better…. It keeps cooking for few weeks, I was in morphine and top up orimorph ask doc for more if you need it don’t suffer
good luck
caroline
My neck peeled & was sore at the end of 6 weeks RT. I just put Balmonds moisturising cream on it (I don't like the paraffin/petroleum-based ones) and it soon healed up. I think it's just like bad sunburn. I hope yours gets better soon. Sending love
September 2022 aged 63 diagnosed with HPV associated SCC base of tongue T4 N2 M0. Chemo & radiotherapy for 6 weeks ending Nov 2022. Now over 2 years all clear. See my profile for longer story
Thank you so much for getting in touch. I must admit l am someone who until now, has never had to take medication apart from the odd paracetamol, now & then, so the thought of having to take morphine was a bit of a shock to me, & a bit scary. That said, when the pain suddenly increased several notches at once, l did not hesitate - it really was necessary & at the mo’ the oramorph is working. If it worsens l shall definitely speak up. Sorry to hear your taste is not yet back - v much hoping it improves soon & wishing you well.
