A few days ago my lovely husband was diagnosed with mouth cancer in the Retromolar Trigone region. There seems to be very little information on this type of mouth cancer other than medical which use terms which are difficult to understand. Has anyone else had experience of this type of cancer?
We are still trying to process the information we have received from the hospital but regardless we are terrified. They say they cannot tell us the staging at the moment until he has his CT and MRI scans which are next week and then we go back in for the results the following week. The consultant said that on an initial look he cannot feel it in the lymph nodes of the neck but obviously the scans will show what is there for definite. He said whatever the staging the treatment will require a major operation and reconstruction of the area.
We both just feel terrified and are living in this other world. We went for a walk by the sea yesterday to get out of the house but it didn't enjoy it like we normally do. We cannot stop thinking about. No matter how hard we try the mind just keeps going back to the cancer. The first night we didn't really sleep at all. Last night we had a bit more sleep but both of us kept waking up throughout the night.
I need to be strong for my partner but how I am going to get into that frame of mind I have no idea.
I would love to know what anyone else knows about this particular cancer and how they coped.
Thanks to all who can offer some information.

Sorry to appear thick but I thought that's why remove the lymph nodes to stop them spreading any cancerous cells further. They said to us that at same time op is done they will remove one or two lymph nodes and test them for cancer. Then they will definitely know the staging at that point.

As Dani’s explained head and neck cancers are different it was a lymph node that brought my cancer to forefront i had no other symptoms. Just Larry the lymph as I called him. I stupidly thought I had pulled a muscle biking x so in reality mine might have bern there since February we were in Spain when I first noticed lump didn’t come home until May. I was fit n healthy xx

Yes, that too. Eventually a cancer left in a lymph node will grow till it escapes the lymph node itself. It doesn't seed elsewhere.
Staging is done on a TNM format. T size of tumour N number of nodes affected M distant metastasis.
Have a look here

So they are just looking for evidence in more than two nodes and position. Like I said. Radiotherapy will mop up any they don't surgically remove

Hi John
I am sorry to hear that you are having such a hard time at the moment. That is a long time to be struggling. Have you tried ringing the Macmillan nurse to discuss the issue around the lymphedema? I personally have not had experience with it but many others on this forum have. I have heard that massage can help if done in the correct way. The Macmillan nurse should be able to point you in the right direction.
The swollen gums sound horrible. Do you know what is causing this? When I have had trouble with painful gums I have used Curasept gel which does help over a few days. I have had to be more careful to not strenuously clean my teeth as this has also made my gums sore. Maybe a visit to your dental hospital would help with some suggestions. I know my dental hospital assisted me greatly.
That is a lot of weight you have lost. Have you tried visiting your dietician or speech pathologist to see if they can help? Are you taking a supplement such as Fortisip or Ensure to help give you the calories you need to help keep the weight on? I still take drink supplements as I find it hard to get enough calories in my diet because of eating issues. I have found they work really well and have helped me maintain my weight.
The swollen gums must also contribute to difficulty eating. It is hard to eat with a sore mouth.
I do hope you can get some solutions as then you will be able to move forward with your recovery.
