Hello everyone,

I've just left the ENT office and am confused. I've been having neck pain and headaches a a slightly swollen left lymph node for about 6 weeks. I looked inside my mouth and noted a swollen tonsil. Went to GP and EVENTUALLY  ended up on the 2w pathway.

ENT assured me it was nothing, tonsils looked fine. Ultrasound showed all seemed fine. BUT today after MRI scan the registrar told me there was some suspicious tissue around the tonsil and just below? She gave me two options, leave it and see how it goes!!!!!???? Or have surgery, take out the tonsils and send them for a biopsy with a camera investigation. This seems to be two extremes? Is this mormal? Has anyone had this and been diagnosed as not having cancer of the tonsil?

I am scared and wished I'd asked a million questions I now have!

Thanks for reading, any advice appreciated

  • I’m flabbergasted that you have been given the two options

The registrar needs to seek advice from their boss

Me? I’d be straight in for  surgery ASAP

    Indeed

Look at it now in case it’s cancer or go away and come back when you’re sicker? Struth!

    Hi Lou

Spent 2 years with an enlarged tonsil, firstly diagnosed as throat infection, told to gargle with salt water,  small lump on my neck appeared a year later GP told me  it was blocked saliva gland, again told  to gargle all would be OK....infection would not go away...I kept on at my GP ( felt like a hypochondriac) and was finally given an urgent referral to ENT....result T2N1 tonsil cancer.

    Good luck

  • Hello, all of you lovely people who have taken the time to reply. I am 41, non smoker. Most importantly mom to twin boys age 13!

I have absolutely ripped her hand off for the investigation and tonsillectomy and signed the paperwork. She had a further look in my mouth using camera and her hand (that was fun). Them offered me two options. She said it will be in first two weeks of January.

Thanks again for all your advice. I've done the right think, just wondered why she'd have said just wait and see? Does she assume this isn't likely to be cancer? Very strange.

  • Sounds awful Peter. I hope you are okay now?! Did you have any pain?

    Hi Lou

Hope everything works out for the best....better to rule out anything sinister....the earlier the better.

    Good Luck

    Hi Lou

No pain, just concerned that the tonsil was not reducing in size, if I had been given antibiotics/antivirals at first consultation and they had no effect on the swelling.... I would have suspected that something more sinister was present.

  • Makes total sense Peter.

I've also tried antibiotics and it did nothing! Hence pushing for 2w pathway. GP wasn't really up for it either. But I couldn't take the pain and he relented and referred me! Why is it so difficult!?

    Hi Lou

GPs?...Pressure at work...lack of awareness....neither of which helps the patient.
