Good Afternoon you wonderfully helpful people. Your assistance throughout my Hubby's Tonsil Cancer Journey has been amazing. His treatment finished 22nd July - we are now just awaiting follow up - Eek - can only pray treatment has done what it should have.
Hubby still unable to eat solids and relying in Fortisip Compacts each day alongside a bowl of very runny porridge in morning. We are however experimenting on all-sorts. Still VERY dry mouth but understand this will all take time. He did so well - hospital kept telling him that! ie, not being admitted during treatment and managing without feeding tube. He did get pretty bad radiation burn in neck, but now healing very well.
So for sure, you now reflect on past few months and look to the future. We go every year to same Hotel in Cyprus. We were there last October and I"m thinking to go this October, would be a great break for Hubby.
I'm assuming wecouldn’t even apply for Holiday Insurance until outcome of treatment and of course, it will depend on improvements with eating / taste. We also know any sun on treatment area is a big no no.
But, even taking all of the above issues into consideration - I still believe a change of scenery, meeting up with friends weve met at Hotel over the years coupled with gentle evening walks - would be very beneficial gir him.
Do you all think it's a step too far? And perhaps best leave any travel until next year? But then again - as we all know - life is way too short.
Now the next big issue! Insurance - can anyone recommend or suggest a good option to get a quote from.
I hope you are all well and enjoying this fine weather.
Kind Regards,
Hazel
Hi Hazel use staysure travel insurance. I have a yearly policy which allows me ti travel once up to 90 days and once up to 50 at a reasonable cost. I finished 31 August 2018 and travelled with oncologist blessing to our apartment in Spain for 3 weeks I didn’t get my final scan until January 2019.
Dry mouth is tge long standing issue for most of us mines around 95 % ok most days warm weather does make it worse but water sorts it out. If he’s up for it go I did. We are all different eating abroad wasn’t easy but with us using our own place I took a case full of ensures My hubby s 60 th was the main reason for us I didn’t eat out on his birthday meal sat there looking a a bowl of soup but I did ride my bike. One life live it.
i was a travel agent so planned everything ti make it easy. Taxis not buses fast track at airport airport lounges. Etc factor 50 plus a buff or scarf for his neck at least first year but factor 50 forever

Hi hazel, your husband is still very early into his recovery, so he's doing really well with his eating. As for travel insurance, I have used a company called Insurancewith, it was set up by a lady who had cancer herself, they are very understanding and reasonably priced. All the best to you both.
Regards Ray.
I’ve just been to Berlin for a week and didn’t even give insurance a thought. Do you think it’s important Hazel?

Glad it's not just me Dani, I've always kept reasonably quiet on travel insurance questions, other than to point people towards Insurancewith because they have a good reputation.
I've never bothered with it myself, maybe not the most sensible approach but never had a problem fortunately.
Metastatic SCC diagnosed 8th October 2013. Modified radical neck dissection November, thirty-five radiotherapy fractions with 2xCisplatin chemo Jan/Feb 2014. Recurrence on larynx diagnosed July 2020 so salvage laryngectomy in September 2020.

For me it would depend on where I'm going; if, for example, I was going to America (never been and no intention of doing so) then it's a no-brainer with their health costs, but just within Europe? Despite leaving the EU you can still get a health card which (using Greece as an example as it's my "most visited") means that if I needed health care there I'd get the same treatment as a Greek national, which is good enough for me really.
Also depends on mindset I guess, if you're a nervous traveller so that not having insurance would play on your mind then go for it.
Out of interest I just ran a quote through on the Insurancewith website and it said they couldn't quote me online so I'd have to phone them. Not very helpful in my circumstances.

Oops my 35 years working in travel it’s ingrained in me ti take out insurance. Ok the Eh1C card or the GH1C card is there for emergencies but it wouldn’t get you medi vac home if needed and at £80 k min from France my house would need to go. To me it’s like would you drive without car insurance ? But that’s my travel agent persona. Especially since brexit the European health system isn’t as user friendly Shsll we say as it once was. I do travel remember for longer than usual but woujd still take ut out for a week or two.

I tend to ring as it’s easier to explain over phone. We aren’t a one size fits all
