Hi all,

mu husband is on day 21 of 33 of radiotherapy. He is really struggling with the horrible taste In his mouth, does anyone have anything they can recommend?

he is currently using a feeding tube as he isn’t able to swallow very well and has moth ulcers etc.

I wondered if anyone had any tips to help with the horrible taste he has at the moment.

thanks

  • Hi Ann.

Sorry to hear your poor husband's going through the mill and no doubt you'll feel rotten for him too.

My H wasn't seeing his usual team when he underwent RT and instead saw the hospital based nurses/specialists at weekly sessions.  They were fantastic and I relayed every symptom H had, which they dealt with promptly.

Is the nasty taste your husband is experiencing metallic?  Whatever it is, do mention it to his dietitian, and others, and I'm sure they'll come up with something to help him.  If he's been given a solution to rinse his mouth to combat ulcers, try to get him to swill his mouth at least five times a day.  H didn't half pull faces when he saw me approaching with the solution, but he only got two mouth ulcers throughout.  I carried on with it, even after treatment finished, until the bottle ran out.

It's dreadful watching your loved one suffering, so I hope it will resolve in time.

All good wishes, and luck, to you both.

  • Thanks very much Gill, we are seeing the dietician and his team tomorrow so I will definitely mention it to them.

I will encourage him to use the mouth rinse more too. Must admit I am struggling with seeing him so poorly at the moment but glad we are over half way  there.

hope your husband is doing well xx

  • Try Xylitol chewing gum or lozenges, many sugar free gums contain the product, Lidl and Aldi ranges are inexpensive.

Caphosol and Difflam may also help.

  • Hi Ann
The taste isn't nice and I must say it contributed to my nausea when I was under treatment. I found sparkling water or diet ginger ale refreshed my mouth more than anything else so he could try that. There is a mouthwash especially made for dry mouth called Bioxtra that has a pleasant taste too and your husband can get that on prescription.
Is he managing to brush his teeth? Keeping the mouth scrupulously clean helps too.

  • Thank you Ann xx

Sound advice from Micky and Dani there.  I got a couple of tubs of mentos sugar free gum to encourage saliva, and also sparkling water and sugar free ginger drinks.  These settled his stomach and loosened thick mucous, somewhat.  Oh, and he enjoyed the taste, too.

It's a long haul but keep ploughing on.
