Hello everyone,
This is my first post and it’s lovely to meet you all.
I had surgery in Nov23 for lymphoma in neck, then 2 months of chemo radiation. I had a feeding tube fitted after the surgery but it was removed about a year later.
I had been feeling better and more like myself, I could eat a soft diet and my speech was slightly slurred but ok. I still have fatigue and am unable to work.
In January my father died suddenly and my mother is living on her own with probable yet undiagnosed dementia. She has days when she phones me up to 10 times, crying and saying how lonely she is. We live an hours drive away and the guilt of not going over all the time is very strong sometimes. My husband is off work with depression caused by a toxic work environment we’re hoping he can retire early soon.
Soon after all of this happened, I started to get a sore tongue and mouth, and it’s getting worse. I can hardly speak and I’m on liquids only like Fortisips. I’ve been to the hospital 3 times but no one seems to know why this is happening or how to help. I’m on paracetamol and ibuprofen, with benzydamine mouthwash which helps a bit but they said I might have to go back on the feeding tube which I don’t want. I’ve tried other painkillers but they cause horrible side effects.
Does anyone have any advice please? Thanks for reading!

Hi Spud.
Did you have lymphoma as in blood cancer or cancer spread from elsewhere into your lymph nodes?

Ah. So not lymphoma. I thought you might be in the wrong group.
So you had surgery on the tongue cancer then a neck dissection followed by radiotherapy?
Could you have oral thrush? Has your GP checked for that?

Sorry for so many questions.
Yes the squamous cell carcinoma came from your tongue?
I
So you had surgery on your tongue in 2022
Then the cancer returned in your lymph nodes a year later and you were treated with radiotherapy and chemotherapy
If it’s your oncologist who doesn’t know why you have pain in your tongue I would get a second opinion or at least request an MRI or even a PET. Something seems to be going on.

I’ve had an MRI and just waiting for results.
Hope that gives you an answer
You could try swishing and gargling soluble aspirin then spitting it out?

Hello Spud65, I'm so sorry to hear what you're going through, it sounds like really tough combination of troubles. I don't have any advice to offer except take care of yourself and keep on at the doctors. Can you get anyone else to help with your Mum? Maybe her GP, or AgeUK or similar?
Sending love and good luck
