my partner had tongue tumour removed and half neck dissection

all margins are clear and lymph nodes also clear

they have suggested radiotherapy for perineural invasion, should he have it?    has anyone had this?

  • hi

I would go with what oncologist says.
I have a friend whose tongue cancer showed invasion along the nerves and that’s what she did.

  • Thank you very much for your reply.  how long ago was this and how is she now?  was it 6 weeks of therapy?

  • Hi dub, I know I wanted to throw everything at the cancer to get rid of it, so I was quite happy to go along with everything they said.

  • Hi, I had exactly the same as your partner and I needed RT to clear up any remaining cancer.
I’ve now had the all clear but nearly 6 months post RT I’m still struggling to eat a full meal but hopefully there will soon be light at the end of the tunnel!

If he has been recommended RT he should take their advice and any problems this forum is so very helpful.

  • Thank you so much for your reply.  He is just very worried as has heard horror stories about the cancer coming back elsewhere years later because of the RT

He wants to be able to eat and swallow and not be in pain etc.

    Thanks for your honesty xx

  • Thank you so much for replying Sue.

Great that you have had the all clear.

Can I ask what problems you had and why are you struggling to eat a full meal? He was stage 2 and tumour 2.5cm.  was your RT treatment 6 weeks?

we are seeing another oncologist on Wednesday.

I really appreciate your reply as we are terrified xx

Radiation can cause cancer many years later which is why it’s so carefully used in children. It isn’t much of an issue if you are middle aged but it pays to reduce any more radiation exposure after treatment. It’s one of the reasons we are advised to use sunblock on the neck.

I stopped using aftershave years ago....dries out the skin in most cases....switched to Simple moisturiser....my wife recommended it....after CRT I switched to factor 50 sunblock with moisturiser.
