So here we are ready to start my first cycle of treatment.
Positive and apprehensive all in one, waiting for my transport to arrive to kick off the process.
Chemo and radiotherapy today so expecting a long day so packed a snack box and drinks to keep me going.
Thanks all for your support and for those new to the journey like me, let's get this thing gone, it will be a challenge but we can get through this xx
Same here. My GP is absolutely brilliant, but he said he couldn't prescribe it; no idea what the reasoning is but it seems some do and some don't. I got it from my dentist.
Metastatic SCC diagnosed 8th October 2013. Modified radical neck dissection November, thirty-five radiotherapy fractions with 2xCisplatin chemo Jan/Feb 2014. Recurrence on larynx diagnosed July 2020 so salvage laryngectomy in September 2020.

It is likely that the local formulary - that is the guidance for prescribing by all state funded clinical settings in a particular area - only allows dentists to prescribe duraphat. That is the case where I live, although my dentist is in a totally different area...
If you google the formulary for our local clinical area and then search for duraphat you should get chapter and verse.
This link gives the rules for Dorset where my dentist is based.
BTW you can also find out if anything else you need is available on prescription by looking at the formulary. Note that sometime you will get a generic rather than a branded version of the drug.
Peter, can you shine any light why there isn’t consistency across the NHS?
This is from Shropshire NHS trust
The whole situation is appalling. Patients with no access to an NHS dentist have to pay for a private prescription and some NHS dentists are passing the buck back to the GPs

GP initially refused to prescribe, then relented, I had spoken to dental hospital who advised GP that Duraphat was a lifelong necessity.
Peter
Hi Peter , so a GP can prescribe this. My hubbies team told him to get prescription from dentist which has been a terrible experience. The dentist told my hubby he wouldnt give him a prescription without being seen . He was told he wouldn't have to pay for appointment by the receptionist who told him what boxes he had to tick as cant work still and on ESA. Then few weeks later we received a bill from the nhs for £25.90 for the appointment and also a fine for £100 for not paying. Hes been stressed about it and now reluctant to get another prescription from the dentist.
That is ridiculous. I know Peter has indicated that each trust has its own formulary but here is a link to Shropshire’s. Page three is the page you want. Take it to his GP. It has worked in the past for other people I’ve helped.
