Hello everyone - hope you forgive the ramblings - they are out of fear I think
I am sure you will understand when I say my mind is in overdrive and I cant think of the words to express the terror which keeps passing over me.
Briefly mid Dec saw something under tongue within 2 weeks seen my Maxiofacial and biopsy arranged - late Jan and then much earlier than expected letter to attend clinic, it threw me as they had said it would be 6 to 8 weeks. So here I am having been told it is early tongue cancer and due for 2 scans and 1st meeting with my consultant(seen his team before) all this coming week. I don't think the results of scan and MRI will be back for a week or two.
I spoke with my key nurse yesterday and she said something that threw me I honestly feel sick when I think of it. Matter of factly she said when everything is back the team will see what is best curative or pallative. This last word turns me sick, why tell me this, since biopsy I have been told it is the early stage and how lucky I was to notice it and see Dentist.
I am in my sixties and just me hubby and our little dog. My heart aches for them. I am in turmoil. I hope as the days and months go by I will get to know you all - right now I really need your guidance and strength.
What are the most important questions to ask the consultant this week. My first thought was my hair....then I told myself what a stupid thought that was!
Thank you all
Hi Bridgetb
How is your husband progressing now since his treatment? I also had cancer of the jaw with a partial mandibulectomy and radiotherapy in 2013. Since then had to have 2 more ops (maxillectomies) and more radio but on the whole am doing fine.
Hope your husband is doing well also.

Hi Lynn , it's been a long and slow process. The surgery went well and reconstructed jaw from bone from he's leg and still little swelling under chin but i think he looks great. He finished radio therapy in September last year and most of he's problems are to do with salvia but otherwise things are improving. Oh wow you had more ops what was they for ?
Hi bridgetb
Glad to hear that your husband is doing well after his op and radiotherapy. The dry mouth issue is one that hangs on for quite a while. It did improve considerably for me after my first op and radio therapy in 2013 although I did find moister foods were easier to manage but on the whole I got back to fairly normal eating and really enjoyed a sandwich especially an egg and bacon one.I got back to living a normal life, returned to work and then retired when I was 65.
My further ops were due to a condition that I have called lichen planus that in very rare cases becomes cancerous. Normally like your husband after one op the cancer is cured and there are no other occurrences so don't worry about him getting more as it is highly unlikely.
I have had this condition from my mid 40's so no surprise when I had more occurrences of cancer but this time in my upper jaw. In 2019 I had a left maxillectomy and more radiotherapy and then in 2022 a right maxillectomy so was left with no upper jaw. Since then have had reconstruction with a titanium prosthesis which a denture attaches to. Things are going well although I am left with a few side effects but coping O.K. with those and am back to living a happy life.
Like I said before don't worry about another occurrence for your husband as it is highly unlikely as I was just a bit of an exception.
Sending my best wishes for your husband's ongoing recovery. He is so lucky to have you as his support person.
