Cisplatin Side Effects

Hi all,

I’ll try and keep this short. I’ve had my 2nd round of 6 weekly Cisplatin treatments today that are running alongside my 30 sessions of radiotherapy for T2 base of tongue HPV positive that was found after I noticed a lump on my neck.

I appreciate it’s likely to change but so far I feel pretty good with eating and drinking unchanged. I had a RIG fitted at weekend and that was a little rough but I feel fine now, if anything I’m quite enjoying learning about it.

I’ve read a fair few posts now, mostly about side effects and I’m wondering if anyone got through the Chemo feeling ok? Same with radiotherapy, didn’t anyone get through it and start to recover fairly fast?

im not new to the head and neck cancer environment. My ex wife had tongue cancer 12 years ago. Her treatment didn’t involve any chemo or radiotherapy though.

many thanks for reading

  • Cisplatin caused me a fair bit of anguish... hiccups due to anti-emetics... sickness.... tinnitus.... balance issues... fatigue...mood swings.

68 years old..struggled at times but got through the treatment with the help of my wife, CNS and the oncology teams.

    Not everyone struggles.

  • Hi  I had 2 of a planned 3 chemotherapy sessions my trust delivers every 3 weeks larger doses rather than 6 smaller does. I managed the chemo ok so major issues the chemo goes alongside the radiotherapy so in many  a ways its  difficult to apportion side effects. But with the chemo I took all meds as directed I wasn’t nauseas at all but I tool the anti sickness meds. My ng feeding tube was my lifesaver and I credit it to me making an uneventful recovery.  We flew to Spain  week 8 of recovery for my husbands 60 th birthday for 3 weeks. But that’s just me we all react different,y ut wasn’t the easiest trip but I did it wit( oncology approval. Side effects can be acute and many are late onset side effects. I have dry mouth at night which is managed I can’t tolerate alcohol or spicy foods but small price to pay.  Good luck with rest of treatment best advise I can give is use the feeding tube as soon as yiu have any issues

  • I was supposed to have 2 large doses but it got changed to 6 weekly as I hadn’t had rig fitted before treatment started. So due to the higher risk of infection it was changed. I’m 46 and quite a big drinker just socially so it might not be a bad thing if it puts me off a little haha

  • Cheers mate. I’m 46. I had hiccups last week for a couple of days after first treatment but they gave me something for it and that’s stopped now thankfully

  • Good evening Jako, my husband is now about 17+ mths post treatment for treatment that seems to have been similar to what you are going through. I can't remember anyone who has gone through treatment involving Cisplatin, not have had any kind of side effects. My hubby was worse after his second round, as he only had the two,but these were hours long each time and then the RT afterwards, these days took a lot out out of him. It's still early into your journey, and I wish you all the best, fingers crossed and it's easy sailing for you. But as people will probably say, everyone copes differently. All the best, fellow wife Mel.

  • Thanks for replying Mel. How’s he doing with it now? Any long term changes?

  • Hello Jako, he's doing fine, considering. Some kind of lasting side effects, dry mouth, constantly having a bottle of water close by,having to get up during the night for a drink, caughing when eating, also this depends on what he eats. Spicy food is still a nono. The Cisplatin has caused him hearing loss,he had to opt for hearing aids. Some days he is more fatigued than others. However, his oncologist is happy with his progress and so far so good.
