Hiii,, I have been diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer and have just finished chemotherapy treatment. The next phase of treatment is radiotherapy with chemotherapy. Recently I have been referred for Proton Beam Therapy via by my private health insurance company BUPA. Unfortunately, the proton beam treatment centers in the UK that BUPA have contracts with have recently gone out of business and therefore, currently, BUPA do not offer this service. I would be interested to hear from anyone else who's treatment has been affected similarly.

  • Sorry to hear that Bassa. Yes the Rutherford are insolvent and the only two U.K. NHS centres don’t have the capacity. Has your consultant told you that IMRT is likely to be just as effective?

  • Hi B and thanks for your reply. IMRT has not been mentioned by my consultant as an alternative,  at the moment I am due to start radiotherapy on 1st Aug. I am in discussion with Bupa regarding any alternative treatment they may be able to offer. IMRT looks like a smarter form of radiotherapy in simple terms and is maybe a discussion I should have with my consultant.

  • My oncologist used to deliver proton at one of the Rutherfords. He’s very keen on it naturally and says yes it’s better but nevertheless his IMRT patients ( like me) recover very well anyway and cure rates are the same. Here he is at The Swallows annual conference last year talking about it if you have twenty minutes to spare https://youtu.be/3ynP5AG-urY

it starts at 2hrs 10 minutes
